Spay Day USA 2006 Sees More Than 1100 Cats Fixed

The event served kitties in Salem, Portland, Woodburn, Newberg, Gresham, Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Sherwood, North Plains, and Tigard

(SALEM) - The results are in: Thanks to a major team effort, more cats than ever before were helped during the fifth annual Tom & Mom Cat Special $10 spay/neuter event in honor of Spay Day USA. Breaking all past records, over 1,100 qualified cats were fixed. Here's what one recipient had to say:

Salem Hospital Hosting Diabetes Awareness Day

Once a disease of the elderly, type 2 diabetes now strikes adults in their prime

(SALEM) - Salem Hospital entrance Are you age 45 or older? Are you overweight, especially around the middle? Does pre-diabetes or diabetes run in you family? Then you may want to attend Salem Hospitals Diabetes Awareness Day.

Cort Garrison, M.D., Diabetes Education Medical Director at Salem Hospital will provide information to help attendees understand their risk factors and tips for the prevention of diabetes.

Dawn Gray, a registered dietician will provide information on balanced nutrition and making good food choices.

Bruce Boston, M.D., associate professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at OHSU, will discuss childhood obesity and the reasons behind the epidemic.

Governor launches Hunger Awareness Week 2006

Receives new report that outlines next steps in the fight against hunger.

(SALEM) - food Kicking off Hunger Awareness Week 2006, Governor Ted Kulongoski today honored some of Oregon`s `hunger heroes` at the Oregon Food Bank 2006 Luncheon of Champions at Northwest Natural Gas headquarters in Portland.

Celebrating Oregon`s successes in the fight against hunger, Governor Kulongoski also announced that he has received the 2006 Action Summary from the Oregon Hunger Relief Taskforce. This new report updates the `Act to End Hunger,` Oregon`s five-year strategic plan released during Hunger Awareness Week in 2004.

`Together, we have made progress in Oregon`s fight against hunger. Fewer people go to bed hungry every night in Oregon than three years ago,` Governor Kulongoski said. `But our work is not done..."

Student prizes include a Haro V24 mountain bike from Santiam Bicycle.

(SALEM) - Cherriots Bus Learn how your transportation choices affect your health, your pocketbook, and the environment.

The fourth annual Car Free Day is Wednesday, April 19th.

Salem-Keizer middle and high school classes will take field trips using Cherriots.

While riding the bus, students can enter a prize drawing by completing a scavenger hunt form.

Prizes of $1,500 will be awarded to the middle school and the high school with the greatest number of field trips taken.

Geer Park Dedication Ceremony April 29th

(SALEM) - Geer Park while under construction The official dedication of the Geer Community Park is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 29th.

The new 46 acre community park is located at 2605 State Street, west of Hawthorne Avenue, and was leased to the City of Salem by the State of Oregon for $1 per year to provide a community park primarily devoted to organized activities for Salem`s youth.

The first phase of the park includes: an entry road off of State Street, two soccer fields, two 90` baseball fields, restroom facilities, a maintenance building, and pedestrian pathways.

Friends of the Library Launch New Spring Book Sale

(SALEM) - Salem Public Library The Friends of the Salem Public Library are offering even more of a good thing in 2006.

A major sale of used books, formerly an annual event sponsored by the group, will be offered in the spring and fall in 2006. The Spring Book Sale is coming up on May 5th-7th in Anderson Rooms A&B on the lower level of Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE.

Chemawa School Prepares for Spring Pow-Wow

An opportunity to support the Native American Youth groups at Chemawa Indian School happens May 5th and 6th.

(SALEM) - Chemawa school sign One of the most historic institutions in the Salem/Keizer area, the Chemawa Indian School, is preparing for its 122nd Spring Pow-Wow. Organizers like Crystal Boyd of the Chemawa School, say it is a fun time for all, `We are very excited. We expect around a thousand people, there are 440 students at the school alone.`
