Salem Hospital Hosting Diabetes Awareness Day

Once a disease of the elderly, type 2 diabetes now strikes adults in their prime

(SALEM) - Are you age 45 or older? Are you overweight, especially around the middle? Does pre-diabetes or diabetes run in you family? Then you may want to attend Salem Hospitals Diabetes Awareness Day. Cort Garrison, M.D., Diabetes Education Medical Director at Salem Hospital will provide information to help attendees understand their risk factors and tips for the prevention of diabetes. Dawn Gray, a registered dietician will provide information on balanced nutrition and making good food choices. Bruce Boston, M.D., associate professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at OHSU, will discuss childhood obesity and the reasons behind the epidemic. Experts predict that more than one-third of American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. The event takes place on Saturday, April 15th, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM in the Wedel Conference Center. From 8:30 to 9:30 AM, their will be a Diabetes Fair and glucose testing. An 8-hour fast is required for the glucose testing. Admission is free, and registration is required and can be made by calling (503) 561-5639.
