Protecting and Restoring the Oregon State Flower

Illegally harvesting Oregon Grape has reduced the plant throughout the state.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon grape Land managers in the South Willamette Valley have discovered a disturbing trend on the properties they manage: Oregon grape plants are being illegally harvested in large numbers, presumably to sell for the herbal properties of their roots.

In addition to being illegal, removal of these plants takes away important wildlife habitat. The Oregon grape, known as the state flower of Oregon, provides nectar for bees and butterflies in the spring and berries for birds and small mammals during summer.

Schrader Bipartisan Bill Passes House

Schrader Bill will Restore 2014 Biological Opinion for the Columbia River

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Oregon rivers Today, a bipartisan bill introduced by Congressman Kurt Schrader (D-OR-05) and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA-05) to bring certainty back to the Federal Columbia River Power System passed the House with bipartisan support.

HR 3144 will put science back into the management of the hydropower operations by codifying the Obama Administration approved 2014 Biological Opinion, a collaborative agreement on how to manage the river system to protect fish and support clean, renewable energy until a new BiOp can be completed in 2022.

Renters Stand at the Epicenter of Oregoon`s Housing Crisis

Nearly 2/3 of all low-income renter families in Oregon spend more than half of their income on rent and utilities.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Oregon’s housing crisis has hit renters especially hard, with a quarter of all renters in the state spending more than half of their income on housing, according to a new report by the Oregon Center for Public Policy.

The non-profit research institute also found half of all renters in Oregon spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent and utilities — what experts define as being “cost-burdened.”

A new gun culture is on the horizon

(SALEM, Ore.) - walkout The walkout lasted for exactly 17 minutes -- a minute for each life lost in the tragedy at Parkland. The clock was set and hundreds of students stood in quiet contemplation as it counted down. The last minute was an observed moment of silence.

Students were well spoken and clearly had done their homework researching the walkout and what it meant.

Why Not Stay on Daylight Saving Time?

(SALEM, Ore.) - time change I hope everyone is transitioning after the hour loss of sleep the government imposed upon all of us a few days ago. Contrary to popular opinion that daylight saving time was for farmers, it was first established in the United States in 1918 as a wartime measure to conserve electricity.

I am absolutely for finding ways to conserve energy. That is one of the reasons I would like to explore an end to changing the clocks and stay on daylight saving time.
