WOU Reports 10% Enrollment Growth Over Past Two Years

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Western Oregon University's Neal Werner University Center Western Oregon University achieved an all-time-high enrollment of 5,349 students for the 2008-09 academic year, a growth of 6.2 percent or 312 students. This is an overall increase of nearly 10 percent since 2006-07.

Student Builds Creative Website for College Money

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com An Oregon college student from the coastal town of Brookings, says has he has found a unique way to save money for school, generate a unique piece of art, and show off more than 60 smiling babies.

Skylar Windham plans to attend Western Oregon University this fall. He started thesmileposter.org because traditional income sources are not available to people as they were in the past.

"I'm trying to save money for tuition, as higher education is expensive these days, but it has been very difficult to find a job in my small town. I haven't given up the search, but in the meantime I figured I give this idea a try."

Police: Illegal Pass Kills Motorist on 99W Near Monmouth

Oregon's Highway Department has a detour established around the fatal crash scene, the highway near Monmouth is closed.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Oregon State Police report a fatal traffic crash on Highway 99W about four miles south of Monmouth. They say the highway there is closed. State troopers on the scene say the collision involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck.

"Preliminary information from the scene indicates a northbound small pickup driven by the victim attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone and collided with a southbound commercial truck."

College Democrats Host Democratic Debate

Secretary of State Candidates Forum at Western Oregon University.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Students relaxing between classes at Western Oregon University. Western Oregon University College Democrats are excited to bring candidates for the Democratic Nomination for Secretary of State of Oregon to campus May 7, 2008 at Noon for a debate. This is an opportunity for the mid-valley citizens to see and hear the candidates directly.

The debate is co-hosted by the Western Oregon University Communication Studies & Political Science Departments. Professor Mark Henkels, PhD. will be moderating the debate. The candidates scheduled to participate are Senator Kate Brown, Senator Rick Metsger, and Senator Vicki Walker.

New Medical Center Opens in Monmouth

The clinic will be open Mondays through Thursdays, 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM and 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Fridays.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The Monmouth Rehabilitation Clinic of West Valley Hospital changes its name to Monmouth Medical Center, and opens at its new location at 512 Main Street, Suite 300, Monmouth Monday, January 28th.

The clinic initially will provide occupational and physical therapy. "Family medicine physicians are being recruited to staff the clinic in the future, in an effort to increase access to primary care for residents of Monmouth and Independence," says Eric Buckland, administrator of West Valley Hospital.

Polk County POINT Team Makes Arrests

The POINT Team is the Polk County Interagency Narcotics Team.

(MONMOUTH) - A month long investigation involving the sales of methamphetamine led to two arrests in Polk County Wednesday.

The Polk County Interagency Narcotics Team, assisted by the Monmouth Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff's Office, served a search warrant on an apartment located at 287 S Monmouth Ave #8 in Monmouth.

Troy Williams, the resident of the apartment, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine, Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a School and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine.

(MONMOUTH) - Western Oregon University will host the 65th annual meeting of the Oregon Academy of Science on Saturday, February 24, 2007. The OAS promotes science education and scientific research within the state. The academy's thirteen sections work to encourage communication among Oregon scientists, both private and public and fosters the growth of tomorrow's scientists through the junior academy for high school students.

Three Children Taken Into Protective Custody After Drug Bust

(MONMOUTH) - Polk County Sheriff car The Polk County Interagency Narcotics Team and the Department of Human Services – Child Welfare Unit responded to a residence in the 300 block of Echols St. in Monmouth on Thursday, after a complaint was made of possible drug activity in the home as well as concern for children that lived at the residence.
