(MONMOUTH) - One person died Wednesday afternoon when the car he was driving crossed the center line on Highway 223 about eight miles south of Monmouth and crashed with a fully loaded log truck.

Police say that around 3:00 PM Wednesday, a passenger car driven by 47-year old Kevin M. Carr of Turner was southbound on Highway 223 near Arlie Road when, for an unknown reason, it crossed the center line and crashed nearly head-on with a northbound log truck driven by 57-year old Joseph McFarland of Neotsu, Oregon.

McFarland was using safety restraints and was not injured.

Mr. Carr was transported to West Valley Hospital in Dallas and died after arrival. He was reportedly using safety restraints and the car's airbag deployed.

Highway 223 was closed about one hour.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation. ODOT, Polk County Sheriff's Office and local emergency responders assisted at the scene.
