After a stint of less than two years as Commissioner of the FDA, Scott Gottlieb, MD has announced his resignation to "spend more time with his family."
On February 24, CBS 60 Minutes aired a segment on the opioid epidemic featuring a high-ranking executive from the pharmaceutical industry, Ed Thompson. Thompson has many years experience in the industry and, in fact, produces opioids for pharma and bravely accused the FDA of opening the floodgates on the opioid epidemic.
Investigation is underway by the Salem Police traffic team

When officers arrived they found the vehicle had in fact struck a tree and that the vehicle was occupied by five juveniles all ranging between the ages of 14 years old to 17 years old.
Four of the juveniles were transported to the Salem Hospital and to Portland area hospitals. Unfortunately, one passenger, a 17 year old, was found dead at the scene. Next of kin has been notified.

Today at about 5:00 a.m., Oregon State Police and emergency personnel responded to the report of a crash on Interstate 5 near milepost 257.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2003 Kia Rio, operated by 20-year old Jacob Bowlsby, of Gresham, lost control and came to a stop in the middle of the freeway. At the same time, a 1997 Honda Civic, operated by 20-year old Oscar Aguilar Esparza, of Salem, was southbound and collided with the Kia Rio.

In my 17 years of writing and speaking of the ever worsening prescription opioid epidemic, I have maintained that the root of the epidemic is at the top -- the FDA.
Purdue Pharma, maker of the highly addictive and dangerous opioid, OxyContin unleashed a holocaust of deaths and addictions by working with the FDA to win approval for long-term use of opioids -- in particular OxyContin.
