Field Burning Season About to Begin in Willamette Valley

Despite being scaled back dramatically from the late 1980s and early 1990s, field burning is still an important management tool for Oregon's $373 million dollar grass seed industry.

(SALEM) - Field burning in the Willamette Valley is about to get underway this summer.

If all goes according to plan, Willamette Valley residents will see the traditional plumes of smoke billowing up from grass seed fields but should not be impacted by the smoke, says John Byers of the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Smoke Management Program:.

Byers: "Field burning season is on target. They are starting to harvest now, which means that we will burning fields typically mid-July. We will occasionally burn after October first, but most of the fields are burned by the end of September."

Civil War Re-Enactment Coming to Willamette Mission State Park

Organizers are expecting over 1,000 re-enactors to take part in the event, demonstrating actual living and fighting conditions of the early 1860s.

Biofuel From Canola? (AUDIO)

There are still more questions than answers when it comes to growing canola for oil as a biofuel.

(SALEM) - canola field With continued high fuel costs for everyone, there is tremendous interest by farmers in Oregon and elsewhere in growing crops that can be turned into biofuels.

Hilburn: "Canola is an excellent oil crop. With all the push for alternative fuels–biodiesel– canola is the leading crop for making that kind of a biological fuel."

Dan Hilburn, administrator of the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Plant Division, says, however, canola could be a problem if grown in certain parts of the state...

Search Continues For Missing 13-Year-Old Girl (AUDIO)

Fire, Police, and the U.S. Coast Guard want to remind ALL swimmers, especially children, NO matter how experienced you maybe, to always wear a life jacket when swimming in Oregon waterways.

(SALEM) - The Linn County Sheriff`s Office Dive team is back searching the murky waters of Walter Wirth lake at Cascade Gateway Park, for a 13-year-old girl who apparently drowned Saturday while swimming with a friend.

The Salem Fire Department`s Water Rescue team spent most of Saturday evening searching the north end of the lake, but couldn`t find the girls body.

The park is a popular picnic spot that draws many local families.

(SALEM) - Oregon State held on to beat North Carolina 3-2 for its first College World Series title. The national title is only the second in Oregon State history.

The Keizer City Council last week approved a 4 percent water rate increase.

The increase means residents on average will pay between $7 and $8 more per year for water services.

Patients at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, are using culture and art as part of their therapy and daily living.

Record heat is expected this weekend through Monday in the Willamette Valley.

(SALEM) - The Hottest Weather of the year will likely come to the inland areas of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington this weekend.

High Temperatures in much of the interior of northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington will be around 90 on Saturday and in the mid to upper 90`s Sunday. Monday will be the hottest day with highs near 100 degrees in most of the Willamette Valley.

(SALEM) - The World Beat Festival begins Saturday at Salem`s Riverfront Park. The event runs from 10:00 AM till 11:00 PM on Saturday, and from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is inviting north Marion County farm owners to attend a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the recent theft of metal from farm fields in the area.

Predicted hot, dry weather is expected to dry out the forest and elevate the risk of wildfire. The declaration of fire season places restrictions on timber harvest activities in the forest.

The Oregon State Fairgrounds is turning silver, as an estimated 12-hundred Airstream trailers and RV`s from across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada converge on the fairgrounds for the 49th Annual Wally Byam Caravan Club International Rally.

(SALEM) - The high temperature in Salem on Monday according to the National Weather Service was 103 degrees. The overnight low was 61 degrees.

Hundreds flocked to the Oregon coast to beat the valley heat. The high temperature in Newport and Lincoln City was 63 degrees.

Beginning August 1st, Keizer residents will be paying more for water. The Keizer City Council last week approved a 4 percent water rate increase.

Actor, Writer Ben Stein Gives Oregonians Retirement Advice (AUDIO)

Oregon Senator Gordon Smith chaired a hearing on securing better retirement for older Americans.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - During a hearing of the Special Committee on Aging hearing, Chairman Gordon Smith, R-OR, questioned actor and writer Ben Stein as to how people can set a retirement savings goals. Smith also pointed to the dramatically declining U.S. savings rate as a reason why Congress should implement reforms to help American`s better save for retirement.

"Tomorrow's retirees will need to stretch retirement dollars over a longer period of time," said Smith. "We need to find better ways for people to manage their assets and preserve their savings throughout retirement. With a huge wave of baby boomers about to enter retirement, it is more important than ever that we educate Americans about the financial risks in retirement."
