(SALEM) - The high temperature in Salem on Monday according to the National Weather Service was 103 degrees. The overnight low was 61 degrees. That blew away the old record high of 97 degrees, set on June 27, 1987. Temperature signs at banks, and businesses read anywhere from 107 degrees in south Salem, to 105 degrees in downtown Salem, to 104 degrees in Keizer Corvallis, and McMinnville also broke records with 103 degree high temperatures Monday. Hundreds flocked to the Oregon coast to beat the valley heat. The high temperature in Newport and Lincoln City was 63 degrees. High highest temperature in the state was recorded at both Medford and The Dalles, both reached 105 degrees. The best place in the state to get away from the heat was to travel to Meacham, where their high temperature was 44 degrees. Beginning August 1st, Keizer residents will be paying more for water. The Keizer City Council last week approved a 4 percent water rate increase. The increase means residents on average will pay between $ 7 and $8 more per year for water services, and the average Keizer business will pay between $21 and $22 more per year. Residents will also see an increase in the administrative fee associated with sewer bills. The sewer rate will increase from $ 4.50 to $4.85. The city says the increases are expected to generate an extra $20,000 annually. This is the fifth consecutive year that water service rates in Keizer have increased. The Salem Police Department, along with The Salem Fire Department will be increasing their enforcement of illegal fireworks this Fourth of July holiday. Salem police spokesman Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says every year officers respond to numerous calls from citizens involving illegal fireworks. Many of these calls originate from citizens concerned about fire danger, noise violations, property damage, and potential injury Kohlmeyer said. Extra officers will be staffed July 4th to deal specifically with illegal fireworks calls. Citizens should be aware that in addition to losing their illegal and expensive fireworks they could and likely will face criminal charges and possible arrest. Kohlmeyer said possessing illegal fireworks is a class B misdemeanor with a possible fine of up to $250. Salem-News.com Salem-area weather forecast…..
