My Personal Hero & Inspiration: The Girl Who Won My Heart

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Out from a crowd of thousands, a sweet yet very determined young lady came up to me and said, "Excuse me Cannabis Lady, but I want you to know that I Love you because cannabis is and has been saving my life from cancer."

Mykayla Comstock is a very special and beautiful miracle of a child, born on June 20th 2005. She's a very happy and seemingly healthy little girl, whom I had the pleasure of not only meeting, but getting to know during the 2013 Portland Hempstalk in Oregon.

Of all the craziness that comes with a cannabis/hemp festival, people and noises and chaos, this one precious little angel jumps out in my mind. She actually sought me out to thank me for my efforts and activism and to share with me the story of her life, which will bring tears to your eyes as well as it does to mine.

She had a strong, sincere mission: she wanted myself and the world to know her story, and this reporter feels it's the least we can offer her is the opportunity to be heard - she is a miracle after all!

Additionally, she is actual proof that our cause of cannabis liberation is not only necessary, but mandatory!

In May of 2012, Shortly after her 7th birthday, this beautiful young Mykayla fell ill, all of the sudden. Her family described it as flu-like symptoms, which included: body aches, fevers, fatigue, cough, and a runny nose. Parents encounter such symptoms all of the time, but for Mykayla and her family, this would prove to be far more serious than a mere flu or cold.

When she was taken to the hospital for care and hopefully some answers, Mykayla was evaluated by an urgent care office and ultimately diagnosed with "strep throat". If only it had been something as simple as Strep for the poor sweet child.

The physician prescribed antibiotics which were used, but Mykayla did not get better.

Soon thereafter, Mykayla began developing a red rash that covered her ankles. "Her bruises that covered her body were alarming to us," her parents said, "she was too tired to play outside, where she normally got bruises like this."

When her stomach began to hurt fairly badly, her parents rushed her to her pediatrician.

His initial determination and instruction was that he wanted all dairy products from her diet removed immediately, to see if that solved the issues Mykayla was having to contend with. Despite the removal of dairy products, Mykayla's condition continued to get worse.

The next symptom Mykayla's parents noticed was when she began having extreme night sweats, which was something she'd never experienced before, so extreme that it would soak clear through the sheets and into her mattress.

Mykayla's breath and breathing was shallow and seeming a growing struggle, and her skin was noticeably pale as well as cool to the touch. "Her heart beat was funny, we couldn't pin-point what it was exactly, but her pulse was different. We feared that we would lose her if they did not find out what was wrong," her parents tearfully recalled.

On Friday, July 13th 2012, Mykayla's parents took her back to the pediatrician because they wanted her to simply and quickly get well. While the physician checked and tested her for such ailments as pneumonia, to their and her family's surprise, they discovered a basketball-sized mass (of lymphoblasts) in her chest.

Mykayla and her family were sent to Portland, Oregon, because that is where the children’s hospital is for Oregon. The very next day Mykayla underwent several spinal taps as well as bone marrow biopsies, and the tests led to her being diagnosed with Leukemia on that shocking July 14th of 2012, a day her family will never forget.

Mykayla’s tumor mass was so enlarged that she was not able to be sedated due to the risk of death which could result from the pressure on her esophagus and heart. According to her parents, many of the valves that drain fluid from around her heart were blocked by the mass as well, which ultimately began causing her what is called "pericardial effusion" (which is fluid around the heart).

Mykayla spent 3 days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the poor little angel had to undergo an entire surgery so physicians could place a "PICC line", and with no anesthetic or pain relief at all due to the risk it posed on her immediate condition... what a trooper she is!

"I feel that there is a balance between conventional medicine and natural medicine," her mother says continually. "Speaking in terms of the average American family, this balance has been lost."

"Our family strives to create this balance for Mykayla, and providing her with the best possible chance of living a normal and healthy long life," her mother confidently reports as their position, and notes they will NOT be swayed.

Mykayla was diagnosed with intermediate risk T-Cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia that had already metastasized to her brain and spinal fluid by the time of diagnosis. According to experts, this is a very rare and aggressive form of childhood leukemia and it accounts for 15-18% of childhood leukemia cases overall as a whole.

Leukemia is actually cancer, but is of the blood and bone marrow opposed to the most commonly diagnosed forms of cancers most deal with when battling the big "C" word, aka cancer.

Mykayla’s DNA was somehow altered, which in turn caused her bone marrow to start producing immature/leukemic white blood cells. These immature white blood cells are known as “lymphoblasts”. Lymphoblasts never die like normal cells; instead they build up and accumulate into a "mass" such as was found in her chest area, causing a mass confirmed as being specific to T-cell phenotype.

Mykayla began chemotherapy treatment on July 16th 2012 and consequently had to begin steroid treatment on July 14th 2012 short before chemo could commence. Mykayla’s Lymphoblast level was monitored daily for the first 8 days of her chemo treatment and weekly if not twice weekly thereafter.

Her lymphoblast level would go down after receiving the chemotherapy treatment, but according to her parents, within a few days after the treatment, it would be back up, sometimes higher than before the chemotherapy which concerned her doctors greatly.

Doctors spoke to her parents about the possibility of Mykayla having to get a bone marrow transplant since the leukemia was not going into remission with the chemotherapy as expected. Most patients treated attained remission within a few days after initiating chemo treatment.

Her parents decided that they wanted to try a natural and organic treatment option still feared by the masses... a whole extract of cannabis oil, and cannabis juicing as well, in the hopes of helping Mykayla both mitigate the horrible symptoms of chemotherapy, and to help her body rid itself of the leukemia completely if possible.

"We had a plan from the very beginning to combat Mykayla’s cancer and chemotherapy naturally and that was to use cannabis in the form of very concentrated and potent oil, raw cannabis juice, and cannabis cooked into food," their website explains.

"Cannabis has been known to kill cancer, protect the body from the damage of chemotherapy, relieve pain and nausea, and it is a neuroprotectant and antioxidant."

Mykayla began cannabis therapy on July 24th 2012 and instantly her parents noticed a positive change in her condition as well as her attitude.

Eating was the first benefit that her parents noticed. Additionally, "she was happier, she smiled and laughed constantly. We loved it!" they said with a smile ear-to-ear that you can hear in their words even still, by reading them here.

"One week after we began the oil treatment, Mykayla’s physicians notified us that her leukemia had vanished from her bone marrow and blood! She was in remission. Never again will I fear cancer. We found the answer!"

Mykayla is currently a year and 2 months into the intense treatment, and has yet to have to use anything other than cannabis medicinally. She uses no pain relievers, not even a Tylenol, and she's only had to take anti-nausea medication a few times through it all, bless her little heart of gold!

Mykayla consumes a gram of cannabis oil daily to counteract the damaging effects of the many chemotherapy drugs that are required for treatment under FDA standards.

"Our daughter has been offered in excess of 10 prescription medications throughout her treatment, nearly all of which have been denied," reports the family. knocking on wood.

My Mother was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer about a one year ago, she has had an extremely difficult journey. She has had two rounds of chemotherapy, one round or Y90 Radiation and now is experiencing liver failure. Jaundice, a weak appetite and depression are a few of her symptoms. I'm wondered what other treatment options she has (such as a liver transplant or a clinical trial) and also how long she has to live. I am unable to post this in the Success Stories for whatever reason,so I posted here. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer on October 18,2014. I was advised by my doctor that my only options were to get a prostatectomy or have radiation seeds implanted in my prostate or receive regular external beam radiation.
