Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

No Purple Heart, no VA Care: what a crime!

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - On January 7th 2009, The Oregonian newspaper printed this short item: The number of U.S. war veterans who have been denied VA healthcare since 2003: 452,677.

ARE OUR VETERANS STILL TOTALLY EXPENDABLE?

When I read this I was so enraged I felt like strangling somebody - almost anybody.

What about thousands of war veterans committing suicide every day from not only lack of care but in most cases, being given care which actually causes suicides?

What are we combat veterans to think of thbis totally dishonorable mistreatment bestowed to us?

I have personal experience. I had a broken neck but I was able to walk into a VA hospital for treatment and they almost killed me. They told my mother three times: "We don't think your son is going to make it."

I ended up with chemical meningitas from a spinal myelogram in which I was a guinea pig in a trial of a new x-ray contrast media. I was so sick I couldn't eat for six weeks and couldn't tolerate light, sound, touch, or almost anything else.

I was also addicted to Phenobarbital, abruptly cut off and went through agonizing withdrawal for three days.

I eventually recovered and became a physician and I wouldn't want my worst enemy to endure the Hell I went through at the VA hospital.

To read of the long-standing current, vile mistreatment of my fellow combat veterans makes me enraged and ill.

It reminds me of the veterinarian derivation of the term veteranary. When a physician was older and out of touch with good medicine practice he was permitted to take care of veterans AND animals.

Is that what is going on now?

I have read that the mistreatment of battle veterans is the official position.

If the battle veteran is mistreated he will get out of the VA system as soon as he can. Frequently they end up as an alcoholic or hard drug addict and as I pointed out, suicide is all too common.

Our new President Obama has implied/stated that he will take better care of our battle scarred veterans. As our new Commander-In-Chief, I hope he can get someone to clean out the stables of hell that is our Veterans Administration.

Hoorah to my fellow PTSD Vets.

I scanned the links, thanks. I just have not seen anything that supports that thousands of veterans kill themselves daily. If this was true, I assure you it would be dealt with by the various veterans organizations out there who maintain a zero policy of endorsing any political party candidate. Also the CDC's suicide rate would have this stat if true. PTSD for combat veterans is a special population within the veterans population. Generally around 10% of war zone veterans are actual combat veterans and not all of them develop PTSD. I agree that the VA could do more, but let's try to get more realistic numbers.

Editor: Dr. Leveque's story was delivered to us written by hand, and I think our staff is responsible for that paragraph being inaccurate. The numbers are very hard to actually know. Thanks for your input, we agree that accuracy is key.

Do you have a source link for the below statistic? I looked but could not find one. Thanks "What about thousands of war veterans committing suicide every day from not only lack of care but in most cases, being given care which actually causes suicides?"

Editor: Figures reported by government agencies are often totally erroneous at times and that has been more of a problem than ever in recent years. I am including links to a number of articles that I think will help:

salem-news is the best. nobody prints this stuff, and it is encouraging to see an Oregon based media telling the truth. Very rare these days. Add depleted uranium into the article. I am as enraged as you are. Do not drink the kool-aid that obama will change this. His first task was to send troops to Afghanistan, bomb Pakistan, gay rights and abortions. Not debating these things on this post, just wondering why the veterans come second/third/fourth/nothing to the issues. gosh darn..I am mad too. The ones that actually risk/and sometimes lose their lives for this "freedom" so often talked about are left in the cold. This is an outrage. While soldiers are in another country fighting for our freedoms, our elected officials are taking them away. No, I will not be silent to the rape. Instead of helping the veterans, obama continues the wars that cant be won, and takes America down as he does it. McCain would have done the same thing, because we are owned by the khazars (zionist regime, look it up) Do NOT let them take our firearms veterans! Thanks to the Marines who helped the navy guys such as myself. When in boot camp, the Marines boot camp was right next door..I remember thinking, dang, glad I didnt join the marines! :-)

Yes this is a national outrage . We have ground up americas finest in an ill conceived and poorly managed war , and than prohibit them from treatment . Time and time again this has happened from Viet nam to this day , and according to the Doctor from ww2 . It seems america wants to hide the truth about war and its real cost . Its all promises promises when you join than they forget you when you need them . America treats its vets like there tissue paper throwing them away when their no longer needed . It is Americas RESPONSIBILITY to take care of those who put their life's and their future on line to serve . Its does not matter if you supported or opposed this latest military action , we the people owe those who served us . Write your local representatives about this disgrace .

Another EXCELLENT article Dr. Leveque and thank you for your efforts to help all of us veterans. We all would welcome your ideas about how to end the nightmare and disgrace that exists with the ignorance of the Government in helping not just ptsd vets but ALL vets who served this country.Picketing and PROTESTING are no longer the answer.Calling our elected officials won't do it either. We need ACTION and we need it NOW.Not after more vets die from suicide or freezing to death on the streets like the Major did last week in Eugene did.HOW Dr. ? WE need to end the debate NOW and help those of us who need the HELP NOW.Save Wall Street,Save big business,Save this,Save that.HOW DO WE GET THEM TO SAVE VETERANS NOW ? We would welcome your thoughts ASAP.The saddest part of our vets is we turn our anger inwards, not outward. And that creates vets ending up dying way before their time.We all survived to make it back to ''THE WORLD''we called it. Only to end up not enjoying being back in it. We salute you Dr. from near and far,and would follow if you would decide that leading all of us to the White House steps if that is what it would take.ACTIONS..speak louder than words Doc..what is the action we need ? Action that has gotten us nothing to this point. I close with respect and the quote,IT IS NEVER WHAT OTHERS SAY OR THING ABOUT YOU..IT IS ONLY WHAT YOU DO THAT COUNTS.
