(PORTLAND, Ore.) - I was astonished to read this in the Oregonian (Dec-4 2013) from the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Oregonian is notorious for printing this adverse garbage. In the same edition was a story about the lack of good, anti-nausea medications.
It is well-known by anyone who reads that marijuana is one of the best anti-nausea medications, better than the two standard medications mentioned in the article: Dramamine, which is really Benadril, and Zofran, which only works about half of the time.
Cannabis/Marijuana (C/MJ) is the best drug for nausea and vomiting.
Getting back to the big boobs article. The author, Melissa Dribben, did good work on the article but she used information that was both obsolete and probably incorrect. She quotes a 1972 article from the New England Journal of Medicine which stated that C/MJ “had widespread effects on multiple hormonal systems,” etc etc etc.
Back in those “bad old days” anybody could get a several-million dollar U.S. grant to study and print about the harmful effects of C/MJ.
This was on of “those” articles! Another was about the shrinking of testicles. It seems with some 40 million users of C/MJ, neither of these effects have been found by anyone else!
Endocrinologists and plastic surgeons are most acquainted with the subject of Gynecomastia, or abnormal breast growth, which occurs in about half of boys during puberty but most cases resolve naturally.
In older males, self-produced estrogens are the cause but about ¼ have no known causation. Up to 25% of cases result from medications other than estrogen. This information is from Wikipedia.
The doctors mentioned above state that about one-third of males coming to them report marijuana use. This should not surprise them, about one-half of adult viral men use Cannabis/Marijuana.
I have a couple of pharmacological comments, or warnings about this Chicken-lickin'-the-sky-is-falling balderdash.
I had about 5,000 medical marijuana user patients. About 60-70% were males. I saw them every year for about 5 years. NONE of them ever complained about breast enlargement, but the did complain about the munchies, which increased caloric intake and caused weight gain, including the boobs, in some cases.
But I had no complaints, with about 3,000 male patients.
Their article does state that more than 90 drugs have been linked to Gynecomastia.
My second observation/experience is that if C/MJ caused breast enlargement in males, it would most likely do the same for females. Some women are relatively heavy users of C/MJ because of their own medical problems, different from men. NONE seem to have grown ponderous breasts, nor did any of them want to use C/MJ for the purpose of obtaining the larger, more desirable boobs.
From my observations and experience, with at least 5,000 patients, I consider the reporter and the doctors mentioned above are all wet.
Maybe the expression should be “smoked out!” Marijuana does have a few adverse effects. The munchies is one of them, but breast enlargement and shrinking testicles are not.

To compare male/female enlargement for smoking MJ quickly demonstrates how one did in medical school.

Just do the math. Gyno sufferers equate to .01% of marijuana users. And to reach .01% all Gyno cases would have to be attributed to marijuana. The quack who resurrected this Red Herring hasn't directly attributed any cases directly to Marijuana. Clearly , he's a bought and paid for Prohibitionist Parasite. "Narcotics police are an enormous, corrupt international bureaucracy ... and now fund a coterie of researchers who provide them with 'scientific support' ... fanatics who distort the legitimate research of others. ... The anti-marijuana campaign is a cancerous tissue of lies, undermining law enforcement, aggravating the drug problem, depriving the sick of needed help, and suckering well-intentioned conservatives and countless frightened parents." -- William F. Buckley, Commentary in The National Review, April 29, 1983, p. 495
