Be Aware! Saturation Patrols Planned This Weekend for Rhododendron Festival

The annual Rhododendron Festival in Florence turns 100 this year.

(FLORENCE, Ore. ) - Rhododendron Festival logo Deputies from the Lane County Sheriffs Office Traffic Safety Team in cooperation with the Oregon State Police and the Florence Police Department will be conducting a saturation patrol of Western Lane County this weekend.

Deputies, Troopers and Officers will be conducting this patrol due to the increase in traffic on Western Lane County roads due to the Rhododendron Festival.

The patrols will focus on Minors In possession of alcohol, DUII, Open Container Violations, Speeding, Following Too Close, Driving Uninsured, Failure to use safety belts and other traffic safety violations.

Salem Public Library Hosting Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training

The training is titled “Recognizing Child Molesters - A New Approach to Protecting Children”.

(SALEM) - child predator poster Many girls and boys will be sexually abused prior to their 18th birthday.

The offenders will typically be someone they already know - perhaps a relative, friend, neighbor or one of the many volunteers and professionals who come in contact with them every day.

The Salem-Keizer School District is hosting a sex abuse prevention training on Tuesday to help parents keep their children safe from becoming a victim of sexual abuse.

2007 Night of Fire Benefit Car Show (VIDEO)

The Night of Fire is a benefit car show that assists worthwhile causes. It is underway right now!

(SALEM) - Night of Fire 2007 Salem, Oregon The Night of Fire Benefit Car Show began five years ago when Rich Bailey, a local race car driver, was approached and asked for help in raising money for a very ill person. The person’s insurance coverage left much of the medical costs untouched. That is when Rich and others created the first Night of Fire.

To date, the Night of Fire Benefit Show has raised approximately $35,000. Bailey says this show is like no other. This year's Night of Fire Benefit car show will be held June 1st, 2007 at the Salem Evangelical Church.

Expert on Suicide Bombing Will Talk at University of Oregon

(EUGENE) - university of oregon Faisal Devji, author of "Landscapes of the Jihad: Militancy, Morality, Modernity," will talk about suicide bombing during a free public lecture at the University of Oregon on Friday.

The talk, "Dying on Principle: The Claims and Renunciations of Suicide Bombing," will begin at 4:00 PM, in Room 211, Lillis Business Complex, 955 E. 13th Ave.

Devji teaches history at the New School for Social Research, a private institution in New York City.

Holocaust Survivor Visits Willamette University

Kryszek’s story echoes the story of Anne Frank — same age, same country, same trauma — but Kryszek survived to personally tell her story.

(SALEM) - Salem-News.com Holocaust survivor Rachella “Chella” Kryszek will recount her life story in a free event Tuesday, April 17th, at 7:00 PM in the Montag Den at Willamette University.

Kryszek was born in The Hague, Holland in 1928. In 1940 the Nazis invaded Holland, and soon after the invasion, Kryszek and her family went into hiding. At the age of 15, the Gestapo captured Kryszek and her family. For one and a half years, she and her sister endured seven different concentration camps, including Auschwitz.
