Steigleman Rebounds but Warriors Fall to Cougars

Cascade Conference Women's Basketball -- Steigleman rebounds but Warriors fall to Cougars.

(GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.) - Senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) rebounded for a sub-par performance with a game-high tying 17 points on 6-for-18 shooting, but Corban's women's basketball team fell to Colorado Christian University, 62-56, on the final day of the Holiday Inn Christmas Bash.

After scoring a season-low six points yesterday, the 5-foot-10 forward returned to her original scoring act as Steigleman tied for the game-high in points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

OSU Women’s Basketball Can’t Push Ahead In Seesaw Loss To Oregon

Both teams exhibited strong shooting, especially in the first 10 minutes of the first half.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - Brittney Davis scored in double-figures for the eighth straight game, finishing with a career-high 23, but the Oregon State women’s basketball team dropped a seesaw battle to Oregon, 76-72, in front of 3,036 fans Saturday afternoon at legendary Gill Coliseum.

The game was the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both clubs. Oregon State dropped to 7-5 overall this season, while Oregon improved to 7-5. “I thought it was a very good game,” Oregon State head coach LaVonda Wagner said. “Obviously, we would have liked to come out on the winning end. However, it did not come out that way, so we put this one on the shelf, learn from it and work to get the next one.”

Northwest U. Falls to Dordt College

Northwest was led by junior Brittany Bowsher’s 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Lydia Llewellyn contributed 10 points for the Eagles.

(KIRKLAND, Wash.) - Dordt College (Iowa) rallied from a slow first half start to pull out a 63-54 non-conference victory over the Northwest University women this afternoon.

Northwest U. had broken out to an early 11-0 lead in the first half but the Defenders from Sioux Center, Iowa, battled back to trail by two, 21-19 with 2:32 remaining in the half. Northwest held off the Dordt College rally and took a 27-23 lead at the half. Dordt came out shooting in the second half and scored four straight points to tie the game at 27 just one minute into the half.

Cascade Conference Mounties First Loss Has Silver Lining

Vanguard Hands Mounties First Loss.

(KAILUA, Hawaii) - Vanguard University women's basketball teamHead Coach Anji Weissenfluh said, "It was the best 36
minutes we have played all season." Unfortunately, EOU's game against Vanguard University was of the 40 minute variety, as the Lions handed the Mountaineers (9-1, 4-0 CCC) their first loss of the season 73-65.

In a battle of two of the nations best NAIA teams Eastern came out firing. The 22nd ranked Mounties (NAIA Division II) held leads as large as 8 points on two separate occasions over 2nd ranked Vanguard (NAIA Division I).

Wolves Hold off Cavaliers for 77-65 Victory

Western Oregon moves to 6-2 with Classic win over Concordia.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - WOU Wolves logoWestern Oregon’s Travis Kuhns had 18 points, seven assists and three steals to help lead the Wolves to a 77-65 win over Concordia in the Phoenix Inn & Suites WOU Men’s Basketball Classic on Friday night at the Physical Education Building.

The win improved WOU’s record to 6-2 on the season, while the Cavaliers fell to 5-6. Western Oregon will play Sonoma State on Saturday (6 pm), while Central Washington will take on Concordia (4 pm) in the pre-set tournament format.

George Fox 60, Heidelberg 57

Bruin Defense Stuffs Princes in Second-Half Comeback.

(SAN DIEGO, Calif.) - George Fox University logoDown by 10 at the half, the George Fox University Bruins held the Heidelberg College Fighting Student Princes to a .194 shooting percentage in the second half and rallied for a 60-57 men’s basketball win in the first game of the Surf-n-Slam Tournament Friday afternoon here at San Diego City College’s Harry West Gym.

The first half saw three ties and six lead changes in the first 10 minutes before Brent Satern hit a three-pointer to give the Bruins a 19-17 lead with 10:24 left in the period. The Bruins nursed a narrow lead for the next four minutes and were up 23-20 when Brian Schmidt hit a basket for the Student Princes with 6:17 left, igniting a 15-2 run that gave Heidelberg a 35-25 lead at the break.

Wildcats Overcome Slow Start to Top Seawolves

CWU tops Sonoma State in first game of Phoenix Inn & Suites WOU Classic.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - WOU logoCentral Washington overcame a frigid start with a dominant second half performance in defeating Sonoma State 78-70 in the first game of the Phoenix Inn & Suites WOU Men’s Basketball Classic at the Physical Education Building.

The Wildcats improved to 5-3 with the victory, while Sonoma State lost just its second game of the season to drop to 5-2. Western Oregon plays Concordia in the second game of the night. CWU will play Concordia on Saturday at 4:00 PM, while Sonoma State will face host Western Oregon at 6:00 PM.

All-American Runner Charles Cummings Joins Concordia Track and Field/Cross Country Program

Cummings will have two years of cross country, three years of indoor track and two years of outdoor track remaining.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - 2003 - Nationally ranked teams show well on the slopes of Kualoa Ranch. Sultana CA girls edge Snohomish WA, 48-52. Eisenhower Yakima WA boys parlay 1-2-3 pack of Robbie Barany, Chuy Chavez and Charles Cummings (below) to near perfect 19-point score. ShelbFormer Yakima, Wash. (Eisenhower High School) and Spokane Falls Community College standout Charles Cummings has signed to compete for Concordia University-Portland, Cavalier head coach Randy Dalzell announced this week.

Cummings had a stellar high school career that included four all-state performances in track and cross country as he finished second in the Washington 4A state cross country meet his senior year and third in both the mile and two-mile races at the Washington 4A state track championships for Eisenhower High School of Yakima. His high school bests were 4:12 in the mile and 9:12 in the two-mile.

Beavers Meet Bobcats December 30th

This marks the fourth meeting in the series between the Beavers and the Bobcats as Oregon State owns a 2-1 edge in the series, including wins in the last two meetings.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - OSU logoThe Oregon State men’s basketball team returns to action this weekend as the Beavers play their final non-conference game of the season as they host Montana State at legendary Gill Coliseum on Sunday, December 30th, at 7:00 PM. The game will be televised regionally by FSN Northwest.

The contest against the Bobcats will mark the first game in eight days for Oregon State as the Beavers are coming off a 67-61 loss at the hands of LSU last week. Roeland Schaftenaar led the Beavers in a losing effort, recording 14 points, all in the second half, and nine rebounds against the Tigers.
