Marijuana Moms and White Wine Alcoholic Debutantes

A little alcohol is easy to use without most people knowing, or caring.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - I have suspected the latter for a long time. I have heard about afternoon bridge parties since I went to college in 1940. I was a golf caddy on women’s day, before that, and the bridge parties on non-golf days were a prominent subject of discussion.

Some women even played bridge after golf, and they got truly snockered. I assumed that this was a product of the upper class, but it seems all women were aspiring to the upper class, golf and white wine.

Recently several prominent newspapers and blogs have pointed out this new social activity my generation X women.

According to the Wall Street Journal (6-21-2013), “Women Buy the Lion’s Share of Wine---Nearly 800 Million Gallons per Year and Are the Primary Drinkers”, an estimated 52% of the total wine consumed.

Binge drinking is commonplace and about 24% that are of college age. In 2002, a survey indicated 47% of women reported being regular drinkers.

The collective binge drinking seemed to start about 1960, when wine advertisers started a campaign for the sophisticates that wine was “fun sodypop”. Actually, the men discovered this a couple of centuries back, but it now was catch-up time.

McCall’s Women’s Magazine featured wine as a part of an “anti-stress diet”. Some authors consider this part of the increase of women in college. Wine is an anti-stress tranquilizer and women need the tranquilizers as much as men. And bring the habit home with their college degrees.

For women, alcohol is a multi-edged sword, they consume it for depression and anxiety which is part of stress but while it may make them feel sexy, it also makes them vulnerable to sexual abuse. You can read about that, just search College Parties Sex Abuse. Here’s an example: College Women: Stop Getting Drunk.

As compared to marijuana, alcohol has considerable dangers. The U.S. government’s national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism, has a good section on alcoholism dangers. Usually, I do not trust government figures, but this time they got it right.

Marijuana is safer than alcohol in every way.

Alcoholism: Web.md posted the best compilation/condensation about the dangers. I will present the dangers here, there is no listing which is “worst”, but here are the dangers.

  • Liver cirrhosis; Turns fibrous and fails to function as normal.
  • Anemia or low red blood cells; Patients end up with fatigue and shortness of breath.
  • Cancer; with high consumption, alcohol turns to acetaldehyde which is much like embalming fluid. This causes cancer in many organ systems.
  • Heart Disease or Cardiomyopathy; the heart gets so big it cannot function. Alcohol also causes blood clots leading to heart attack or stroke.
  • Brain cell damage; Who wants to be punch drunk?
  • Hypertension; How it does this, I am not clear.
  • Interference with other medicines; This may be an increase or a decrease in effects.
  • Abnormal violence; You have all heard of the fighting, obnoxious drunk.
  • Suicide or accidental overdose; Some drunks brag they can drink a whole bottle and survive, usually they lose.
  • Danger to the unborn child; fetal alcohol syndrome produces a child severely, mentally retarded. It’s not worth the pleasure of a “social drinking”.

This article has been written by a physician/ pharmacologist who has drank my share of booze and a bit too much on occasion. After surviving World War II, I was plastered for three days. That was a celebration of the worst two years of my life.

CAN THEY HANDLE THE TRUTH? MARIJUANA IS SAFER THAN WHITE WINE ALCOHOL.
