(PORTLAND, Ore.) - I have suspected the latter for a long time. I have heard about afternoon bridge parties since I went to college in 1940. I was a golf caddy on women’s day, before that, and the bridge parties on non-golf days were a prominent subject of discussion. Some women even played bridge after golf, and they got truly snockered. I assumed that this was a product of the upper class, but it seems all women were aspiring to the upper class, golf and white wine. Recently several prominent newspapers and blogs have pointed out this new social activity my generation X women. According to the Wall Street Journal (6-21-2013), “Women Buy the Lion’s Share of Wine---Nearly 800 Million Gallons per Year and Are the Primary Drinkers”, an estimated 52% of the total wine consumed. Binge drinking is commonplace and about 24% that are of college age. In 2002, a survey indicated 47% of women reported being regular drinkers. The collective binge drinking seemed to start about 1960, when wine advertisers started a campaign for the sophisticates that wine was “fun sodypop”. Actually, the men discovered this a couple of centuries back, but it now was catch-up time. McCall’s Women’s Magazine featured wine as a part of an “anti-stress diet”. Some authors consider this part of the increase of women in college. Wine is an anti-stress tranquilizer and women need the tranquilizers as much as men. And bring the habit home with their college degrees. For women, alcohol is a multi-edged sword, they consume it for depression and anxiety which is part of stress but while it may make them feel sexy, it also makes them vulnerable to sexual abuse. You can read about that, just search College Parties Sex Abuse. Here’s an example: College Women: Stop Getting Drunk. As compared to marijuana, alcohol has considerable dangers. The U.S. government’s national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism, has a good section on alcoholism dangers. Usually, I do not trust government figures, but this time they got it right. Marijuana is safer than alcohol in every way. Alcoholism: Web.md posted the best compilation/condensation about the dangers. I will present the dangers here, there is no listing which is “worst”, but here are the dangers.
