(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The movie, Reefer Madness, about the grave dangers of marijuana point exclusively to the "risks" which were out of this world and completely false. Marijuana and its chemicals are the least dangerous medical substances ever found and used. This is not only in today’s news but the history of cannabis/marijuana for the past 5,000 years. Oregon is one of the most successful and safest states for its use. In the face of all this and the 59,000 legal medical patients and about 30,000 legal marijuana caregivers the Oregonian newspaper still denigrates the entire concept of marijuana. This is a confusing surprise because most of the other local newspapers, Willamette Week, Portland Tribune, Oregon City News are positive for medical marijuana or at least neutral. Maybe this is why the Oregonian newspaper is slowly going out of business. At the last vote, 47% of Oregonians were FOR legalization of marijuana. If the Oregonian has the crass effrontery to insult 47% of the population, no wonder they are definitely slipping beneath the surface. From the start, in 1999, when legalization of medical marijuana had its start, the Oregonian hasn’t had one good thing to say about one of the best medicines ever to be used in the United States. How can they stand by their empty guns, with this negative attitude, while 21 states have in effect legalized it? I read one of the latest articles about legalization of marijuana dispensaries and the committee making the regulations in Oregon. A person in the marijuana business, marijuana grower, dispensary owner or medical marijuana patient, must be gagging on the machinations of the pseudo expert committee. Most of them know zilch about the medical marijuana industry. In Oregon, medical marijuana is legal and running really well, but it appears as if the committee is really working for the Mexican Mafia! The restrictions they are proposing will make the cost of legal marijuana and dispensaries beyond the price range of most sick, needful patients, who will have to deal with illegal growers and the black market. The Mexicans and other illegals will be making more money off the really destitute patients, who will be out in the cold, or forced to become illegal. The present marijuana system is working reasonably well, now. It needs help to progress, now, not more foolish, costly, restrictions proposed by this gang of anti-marijuana thugs who basically know nothing but law enforcement and punishment. The few marijuana advocates on the committee will probably be outvoted for any progress. Marijuana should be about 50-100 dollars per ounce. The new regulations may kick it to about 500 per ounce, beyond the reach of most patients. Of the 13 members of the marijuana committee, at least half, by the nature of their jobs (COPS) are rabidly against ANY form of legalization, despite the fact that marijuana can be life-saving. They just aren’t interested in the sick and crippled. Members of LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) would be far better on the committee than these anti-marijuana policemen.
