(PORTLAND, Ore.) - "Marijuana addiction" is a grossly mis-applied statement. Marijuana/Cannabis is probably the least addictive, least harmful medication ever discovered and used by humans. The worst adverse effect in the words of many users, is “falling asleep on the way to the refrigerator for more munchies.” I wouldn't worry. Marijuana does cause sleep and hunger. Any other statement of harm, is totally overblown, but naive medical users do accidentally get “high”. This is usually of short duration and no noteworthy consequence. This subject was recently brought up by several stories on CNN. For example, “California Cracks Down on Rehab Clinics”, a CNN/CIR* investigation (8-3-2013). *CIR is the Center for Investigative Reporting and Independent Research Organization. Drug/Medi-Cal is the overseeing organization for the largest California Medicaid Program. CNN/CIR accuses them of weak oversight and excessive fraud, cheating, deception and overcharges to medicaid, possibly as much as $100 million dollars. These drug rehab centers have figured out that they are not really being monitored. The California Dept of Healthcare Services has suspended 157 clinic/rehab centers from giving “treatments”. These treatment centers are all over the state of California, but naturally are concentrated in the large cities, and making huge profits with fake patients, fake billings, and even paying fake patients to come to their clinics because Drug/Medi-Cal will pay all of the billings. One of the most prominent of the rehab centers is Passages/Malibu which runs 8 5-or-6 bed rehabs. They run one of the most luxurious treatment centers used very much by Hollywood celebrities, boasting that it offers 22 different types of therapy. The Malibu city population overload is killing the city with parties at the rehab center lasting overnight until dawn. One comment in the newspaper, The Daily Beast, headlines “Malibu Cracks Down on Posh Rehab Facilities”. The Daily Beast posted, “What was once a quiet beach town is now crawling with swanky treatment centers that cater to the A-List stars.” The costs for this "therapy" range from exorbitant into the stratosphere. That is, from about $6000 per month to as much as $50,000 for a six month program; or, for the ultra-rich, some program costs are up to $30,000 per month, which includes the most deluxe trappings. I am sure the California Dept of Healthcare Services does not include these high priced facilities, but here we go again. Medical pays an astronomical price for the indigent “drug addicts”. One of my biggest surprises in researching for this article is to see that even marijuana addiction rehab was offered on the basis that “Now that marijuana was essentially legal in California, that there would be a lot more addicts”. There are well over a million legal medical marijuana patients in the State of California, alone. If these fake "addicts" are their new bread and butter, somebody needs to really sit up and take notice. This is so foolish, that it is beyond the pale. There are some people who have found that marijuana is their best medicine, and they might have been using it for 40 years or more, but they are not addicted. It is more like an asthma patient using his medications on a chronic basis. A person may become dependent on marijuana, but certainly not addicted.
