(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Following the lead of Mayor Kitty Piercy from Eugene, who recently declared Medical Marijuana Awareness Week, Portland, Oregon Mayor Samuel Adams has proclaimed May to be Medical Marijuana Awareness Month.

At the urging of medical marijuana program participants and members of the Board of Directors of Oregon NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), Tom Miller, Chief of Staff for Mayor Adams said, "I've discussed this with the mayor. He's pleased to make the proclamation."

The proclamation was delivered by hand to Madeline Martinez, Executive Director of Oregon NORML on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 during the week following the tenth anniversary of the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP).

Multnomah County is home to the largest number of OMMP patients in the entire state of Oregon.

It is a tribute to its success that Mayor Adams has honored the OMMP by recognizing the need to raise awareness.

For more information, please visit ornorml.org or call Madeline Martinez at the Oregon NORML message line at 503-239-6110.

Here is a KGW Channel 8 report showing the remarkable progress marijuana decriminalization efforts are experiencing in Oregon:

Im so happy that you all are leading the way in this fight! Oregon is a model for all state to ahave laws too. I think its great that you have Mayors that will speek the truth on this issue. Too many political figures think supporting the pro prohibition view and are forced or shoose to lie about Marijuana. What we need is just the truth, show the facts and science behind Marijuana, then we as a nation can choose what will be the best policy. Up to this point and its going on 70 years since Marijuana Prohibition really started and we have never had a truthful debate about Marijuana. We all, even none users should all want to hear the truth and to properly debate this issue! If anything the point of regulation is valid, we have handed the control over to criminals, they choose to whom they sell(kids), where they sell(school yards) and when they sell(3am on your street)! Regulation of tobacco and alcohol has seen a decline in teen usage rates for years, the "We Card" program has proven to be very sucessfull and could be used for Marijuana in the same manner! If everyone was truly aware of the suffering people accross this nation, and were told the truth about the many medical uses for marijuana as the sfest treatment, we wouldnt be talking about this now! America, you have to investigate marijuana your self, look at all the data and the true real world resolts, like 10 years of medical marijuana in Oregon, once you do you will agree tha tarresting marijuaan users is a crime in itself! End Prohibition today, Contact your Legislators, state and federal today!

Marijuana legalized: According to a study released by the Mercatus Center of George Mason University, Alaska is the clear winner among the 50 states in terms of personal freedom: Sarah Palin’s Alaska does extremely well on personal freedom, conclude study authors. Reasons for its high personal freedom alone score include: fully legalized possession of small amounts of marijuana (accomplished through a court ruling), the best (least restrictive) gun laws in the country, recognition of same-sex domestic partnerships, and possibly the best homeschooling laws in the country. SEEMS THAT THIS REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR SHOULD BE HELD IN HIGHER REGARD BY THOSE WHO DON'T BECAUSE OF HER CONSERVATIVE CREDENTIALS.

Portland's mayor is a joke of a credible spokesperson for anything. this movement would do better if it found another portland area rep.

This is indeed good news and just one more step on the path to total legalization of pot. Mexico just legalized possession of small amounts of all drugs. Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001 and their experience has been positive. Now if you are caught with a 10 day supply of your drug or less you face an administrative court, not a criminal court, but in practice they are just not arresting people. A group of 10,000 very serious policemen, prosecutors, attorneys and citizens have formed a group to legalize ALL drugs, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (http://leap.cc ) They see what happened when we legalized alcohol in 1932 as a good example of how drug legalization would work. This foolish war on drugs has lasted 37 years and cost us over a TRILLION dollars and we are not an inch closer to stopping drugs. How many millions of Americans are we going to lock up in prison for decades? Mark Montgomery boboberg@nyc.rr.com
