(SALEM, Ore.) - The Institute for Cannabis Therapeutics and Southern Oregon NORML reports that they are proud to host the first Protect Your Rights 420 State Tour. Organizers hope to bring education and clarity to various aspects of Oregon's Medical Marijuana Program; and they say it is an important responsibility to speak up and sound off when citizens are denied their legal rights. Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) cardholders operate within a system of checks and balances principle. Protect Your Rights 420 was formed to provide the information OMMP cardholders need to check and balance the power used by our government’s law enforcement officers against our own citizens. Medical marijuana patients are often senior citizens or severely disabled individuals who have, for the most part, spent their lives trusting in the power of law enforcement to protect and serve their community. When these patients are approached by members of law enforcement they almost always cooperate, believing that by registering as a medical marijuana cardholder, they are doing their best to be law-abiding citizens. With strict laws such as the “12 inch rule” OMMP cardholders can become out of compliance overnight as their plants grow. What cardholders don’t realize is that they are often being branded, stigmatized, dehumanized, and criminalized by law enforcement. Police officers that lie to citizens in order to convince them to incriminate themselves need to be stopped before more people lose their liberty. Law enforcement officers contribute millions of dollars in seized assets and property forfeitures from marijuana to help fund the failed War on Drugs. A 2008 study by Harvard economist Jeffery A. Miron, estimated that the United States spends $44.1 billion dollars a year to pay the salaries of Law Enforcement Officers. It is in their best interests to lock up non-violent drug offenders. While not every police officer does lie, every OMMP participant should know that many officers will lie and utilize manipulative tactics in the name of the War on Drugs.
