Thanksgiving Weather: Stormy Pattern May Cause Delays for 48.7 Million Americans

A storm will roll into the Northwest the middle of next week

(AccuWeather Global Weather Center) - A stormy pattern persisting into Thanksgiving will have impact on the busiest cross-country travel week of the year. More people travel farther during the week of Thanksgiving than any other week of the year.

AAA says 48.7 million Americans are projected to travel 50 miles or more from home Wednesday, Nov. 23, to Sunday, Nov. 27, which will be the greatest volume since 2007, just prior to the Great Recession.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Much attention has recently been focused on preparing for a high-magnitude Cascadia earthquake. But tsunamis are a significant after-effect of high-magnitude quakes.

Although they are rare, tsunamis can be extremely deadly. In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) designated Nov. 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day. This year marks the first observance in the U.S., and around the globe.

(SALEM, Ore.) - With the extended weather forecast continuing to call for high temperatures and gusty winds, the City of Salem will continue to ban open burning until further notice.

All outdoor burning, including ceremonial and recreational fires, will continue to be prohibited within the City of Salem. This ban is based on weather conditions and community fire safety needs. The ban will remain in effect through this week.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Extremely hot temperatures are coming to Oregon Thursday through Saturday with highs in the 80s along the Coast and near (or above) 100 inland. Critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop Thursday and continue through at least Friday night.

Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible; drink plenty of water; reschedule any outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours; anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded area.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The National Weather Service has announced a High Wind Watch is in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday evening for the greater Portland and Vancouver metro area, the Willamette Valley, Lower Columbia and I-5 Corridor in Cowlitz County.

South to Southwest winds are expected to be 30 to 40 mph, with gusts to 60 mph.

Landslide Near Sea Lion Caves Closes Hwy 101

Travelers are advised to take alternate routes.

(FLORENCE, Ore.) - U.S. 101 will be closed at milepost 178 Sunday night and into Monday following a landslide just north of Sea Lion Caves and south of the Cape Creek Tunnel, 11 miles north of Florence.

ODOT crews will be working through the night to clear the roadway, but cannot safely open to traffic until debris remaining on the hillside is cleared in daylight to ensure slope stability and safety for travelers.

(TILLAMOOK COUNTY, Ore.) - One lane of OR 131 two miles east of Oceanside in Tillamook County is now open to travelers.

The road was closed over the weekend when a sink hole developed caused by a failed culvert. Starting this morning, flaggers will control two-way traffic 24/7.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a workshop showing anglers how to make the best of snowy, icy conditions at a Jan. 30, 2016 Family Ice Fishing Workshop on Lake of the Woods near Klamath Falls.

The family-friendly workshop is open to adults and youth. Youth must be at least 9 years old and accompanied by a paying adult.
