(SALEM, Ore.) - With the extended weather forecast continuing to call for high temperatures and gusty winds, the City of Salem will continue to ban open burning until further notice.

All outdoor burning, including ceremonial and recreational fires, will continue to be prohibited within the City of Salem. This ban is based on weather conditions and community fire safety needs. The ban will remain in effect through this week. The City will reevaluate the forecast later this week prior to determining burn status for the weekend.

Cooking outdoors in approved propane or charcoal barbecue grills is allowed during this total burning ban, but always remember and follow safe grilling practices, and properly dispose of coals in a metal container when finished.

The Burn Ban includes the following open burning situations:

  1. Agricultural burning
  2. Land clearing or slash burning
  3. Recreational fires, including:
    a. Backyard fire pits
    b. Outdoor fireplaces and portable fireplaces
    4. Ceremonial Fires

Individuals found to be in violation of these requirements during the burn ban may be held liable for the cost of extinguishment and for any property damage resulting from an illegal fire.

Questions? Call the City of Salem Fire Department at 503-588-6245.
