Embedded Journalist Tim King Joins Oregon Soldiers in Afghanistan

DISPATCHES FROM AFGHANISTAN
After a somewhat arduous journey, Reporter/Photojournalist Tim King has joined the 41st Combat Brigade of the National Guard at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan

(SALEM) - It must have been a long trip, you’re thinking. That’s one way to put it. The morning of Monday, November 6th, the Salem-News.com crew chaperoned Tim to the Portland International Airport and headed for Delta.
We watched as his bags carrying the bullet proof vest and helmet, and his tripod in its duffel bag, were all loaded up on the cart and taken through the baggage shoot. With camera slung over his shoulder and carryon bag in hand, off he went to remove his shoes for the nice lady.

Tim witnessed much military fanfare as the order of the day in Hattiesburg, celebrating Veteran's Day

(HATTIESBURG, Miss) - cannon on Veteran's Day in MS Tim King bid farewell to friends and family at the Oregon Military Headquarters in Salem, November 7th, to be embedded as a journalist with the 41st Combat Brigade of the Oregon National Guard.

He headed first for New Orleans, where he was picked up by the Camp Shelby shuttle and taken to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, near the back gate of the base and found a motel for the night. Camp Shelby is the Army base where the troops leaving for Afghanistan were located that he was to rendezvous with. He learned an old lesson about best-laid plans, they often go awry.

Afghanistan Reports Will Begin in Coming Days

Learn about the honor, sacrifice and courage of the individuals who go where duty calls.

(SALEM) - Tim King and his niece Olivia Young I've had wonderful support in preparing for a trip to Afghanistan where I will report on the lives of Oregon soldiers serving at war. As I write this, I am less than 12 hours away from that trip to the airport and it is an exciting time.

While everyone has been supportive, I have had those who ask me if I have lost my mind, and I expected that to a degree. I remember similar thoughts when I decided to go sky diving for a news story. Why would you jump from a perfectly good airplane? Why would you leave a wonderful place like Oregon and go to a war in Afghanistan?

(SALEM) - Salem-News and FOX-12 logos Internet Photojournalist/Reporter Tim King of Salem-News.com will embark for Afghanistan November 8th. While there, Tim will be embedded with the 41st Combat Brigade of the Oregon National Guard at Camp Phoenix at Kabul, Afghanistan. Reports will be posted here on Salem-News.com over the next several weeks, and now the Portland area will also be able to catch Tim's "Dispatches from Afghanistan" on local TV.

It was announced Monday that Tim's reports will be seen exclusively in Portland on KPTV FOX-12.

Afghanistan Coverage Draws Closer

Only two years old, Salem-News.com is sending it's first reporter overseas to live with Oregon National Guard soldiers at war.

(SALEM) - Soldier art If the schedule holds, Salem-News.com's Tim King will be in Afghanistan in a little over a week to begin daily reports from the 41st Combat Brigade.

The massive effort to embed Tim with the soldiers overseas is many months in the making, and our staff hopes that these reports will make a serious difference in the lives of combat troops who often say the better side of their efforts are largely ignored.
