Salem-News.com Will Go to War in Afghanistan (UPDATE 9 14 06)

Support from the community is already arriving to help sponsor veteran reporter and photojournalist Tim King, who will spend time with Oregon National Guard forces in Afghanistan.

(SALEM) - Salem-News.com’s Tim King will travel to Afghanistan in October to be embedded with the 41st Combat Brigade of the Oregon National Guard. The unit has been in Afghanistan for the last few months training members of the Afghan Army. The tempo in Afghanistan has increased in recent days with the death of an Oregon National Guard sergeant, and the deaths of several Canadian soldiers in clashes that left over 100 Taliban dead. Another aspect of the deployment involves searching for remnants of Al Qaeda and Taliban forces. Salem-News.com General Manager Bonnie King says she is excited that Tim will have a chance to tell the stories of these soldiers who have spent so much time deployed in combat theaters in both Afghanistan and Iraq. We also hope to work with other Oregon media to diversify the delivery of the stories he plans to tell, “These will be personal stories from the people who are disconnected from their families and loved ones. Tim plans to post as many video reports as he can, every day if possible, and send back audio stories for radio and written stories for print.” Salem-News.com is seeking support for Tim King’s assignment in Afghanistan. There are sponsorship opportunities for those interested in making Tim’s reports from the combat theatre possible. We are accepting financial contributions to get the local perspective of what the Oregon Guard is experiencing while in Afghanistan. Any businesses, groups or individuals that are interested in helping sponsor the Salem-News.com war reports should send an E-mail to newsroom@salem-news.com. Checks may be sent to: Embed Tim
Salem-News.com
P.O. Box 5137, Salem, OR 97304. In addition to financial support, Salem-News.com is also looking for military body armor and other equipment as is required for the embed.

=================================================== ** On Wednesday, Nopps Jewelry and Art provided a kevlar military issue helmet with a value of $250. This is greatly appreciated! You can visit their site: www.nopps.com We will release more details on Tim’s itinerary, timeline, and other information as departure time nears.

The real difference between Salem-News.com and say the Statesman Journal is where Tim's heart is. For him, it's not the business, it's not the money, but it's the truth and the justice--his concern for the right and the wrong of the world we live in. Tim really gives a damn. I don't think I've ever read anything in the Statesman Journal where the reporter really cared what he or she was writing about. For them, it's a job--and not one that pays the reporters very well either. Tim puts his heart and soul in every word he writes and each frame he shoots. It's that kind of honesty which attracts people. You can't buy that with money. I wish you the best, TIm. I know this is something you've been wanting to do.

Tim...I remember you as a young 'punk'...you used to get your haircuts while riding your skateboard at Bush...your hairstyle seems to have changed, but seemingly not much else...still have the brains, courage and imagination...I was impressed with you at the age of 15...and still am!....go and be safe!

Tim, I only got a chance to speak to you once and it was then that I found out what an incredible person you are (and intelligent too.) Take care of yourself but also enjoy the experience. I wish more people could get a chance to talk to you or meet you personally.
