Sep-14-2006 20:04TweetFollow @OregonNews Support for Salem-News.com Dispatches from Afghanistan Underway (UPDATE 10/05/06)Salem-News.comPeople who help support Tim's overseas war coverage, benefit Oregon's soldiers who normally work beside us, their families, and all who care about the work they are doing overseas. Check the list below to see who is already involved.
(SALEM) - People are going to be seeing war from a different vantage point in the coming weeks. Salem-News.com will embed Photojournalist/Reporter Tim King with the 41st Combat Brigade of the Oregon National Guard in Afghanistan. Tim will travel over around the middle of October. While there, he will spend time with as many different aspects of the Guard's operations in Afghanistan as time and space allow. The reports will represent some of the most current war coverage that is available, and the video news reports that Tim shoots and produces each day will be available to Salem-News.com visitors worldwide. So what will it be like? For Tim, it already means a few things, like a series of shots that began today at Salem Hospital that include Hepatitas A and B and Rabies. Oral innoculations include pills for Malaria and Typhoid. The entire series takes one month to complete. As the community support grows, Tim's date of departure draws nearer. There are a number of costs that are fairly substantial, and Salem-News.com is actively seeking partners in the area to help fund and support the upcoming Dispatches from Afghanistan.
Salem-News.com is a locally owned news organization that has been on the air for more than two years. It is a highly ranked Website that is part of the worldwide Google News program. That means that all Salem-News.com stories are instantly "picked up" and distributed to the world through the biggest Web organization around. That's great coverage. We would like to thank the businesses and individuals listed below. They will remain a part of these reports up to and during Tim's time in the war theatre. We greatly appreciate the desire of those who want the more positive stories of Oregon's men and women in the National Guard to be told.

McDonalds Restaurants of Salem provided $1,100 toward the trip to Afghanistan. We hardly know how to thank them enough, but we know this is one organization that sees the value of bringing the stories of our Oregon soldiers home. Nopps Jewelry and Art provided a kevlar military issue helmet with a value of $250. This is greatly appreciated! You can visit their site: www.nopps.com Camo and Gear has provided desert boots, made for the terrain of Afghanistan, valued at $100. They’re a great source of supplies and support for local military and civilians on the way to the mid-East. Eric Mason of Salem provided $100 toward Tim's trip to Afghanistan. Eric and Tim formerly worked together at Portland, Oregon's ABC station. Jesse Anderson of Lincoln City provided funds to help, as did Dan and Marti Motley of Salem. One of Salem's most courageous families, David and Arlene Banks, provided $100 toward Tim's trip. Another pair of Salem heroes, Scott Smith and Margaret Sanner, provided funds to assist with Tim's Afghanistan trip. Marilyn Callahan, LCSW generously provided $100 toward the Afghanistan mission. Roger Yost and Alessandro's Ristorante have provided generous assistance for the Afghanistan coverage.

Tim, you know you have my support but as one of my dearest friends, it is scaring the *and^ out of me to see your go over there, but it scares me to know all or our soldiers are over in the middle of it. I know you will do a great job and look forward to when you come back.
