(SALEM) - I've had wonderful support in preparing for a trip to Afghanistan where I will report on the lives of Oregon soldiers serving at war. As I write this, I am less than 12 hours away from that trip to the airport and it is an exciting time.

While everyone has been supportive, I have had those who ask me if I have lost my mind, and I expected that to a degree. I remember similar thoughts when I decided to go sky diving for a news story. Why would you jump from a perfectly good airplane? Why would you leave a wonderful place like Oregon and go to a war in Afghanistan?

The answers are different even if there is a common theme.

Both supply a stream of adrenaline, but there is a big difference between doing things for sport and necessity. As a veteran, I have an undeniable love and respect for people who serve in the military. I am going to show a side of their work that avoids politics and concentrates on accomplishments.

Our soldiers serving in both war theatres overseas are performing a demanding role. We know them as the people that we see at the bank, at the fire department, grocery store, etc. Historically, National Guard troops have been held in reserve during time of war. These days, it is hard to meet anyone in the guard without some sort of combat experience.

I am going to bring visitors insight that can only come from being there, and I really will be able to do the stories that get missed; that is the main reason I am going.

While I will represent Portland's FOX-12 and a few other TV stations, I am still primarily doing this for Salem-News.com and more Afghanistan reports will be posted on this site than anywhere else.

So watch for stories about what Oregon soldiers are doing, where they are living, and learn about the honor, sacrifice and courage of the individuals who go where duty calls.

If all goes according to plan, I will have my first report out by the end of the week. Stay tuned.

To all: Let's get rational and reasonable here, now: IF you really appreciate Tim's trip as courageous coverage in conscientious community service, let every one of your suppliers --grocery, gas, bakery, any service --ALL !!--know how you feel, and suggest they pitch in, too, rapidly and well. That's the least we ALL can do, and is well deserved...sure wish I could help tote camera !!

Ken King November 9, 2006 10:32 am (Pacific time)
