British Prime Minister David Cameron today demanded a "transparent, credible and independent" probe into the alleged massacre of Sri Lankan Tamils, days after he pressed President Mahinda Rajapaska for an enquiry into rights violations during the final days of the civil war in 2009.
During the CHOGM summit in Colombo this month, he had said that if the Sri Lankan government fails to launch an independent enquiry by March 2014, UK will call for an international enquiry through the United Nations.
The relatives of missing persons, while peacefully demonstrating and demanding the visiting British PM to witness their plight, were attacked by the Sri Lankan Police...

There is absolutely no democracy in Sri Lanka. Any activist runs the risk of making a disappearing act without a trace. Jude Bashil Sosai (Suresh) is in that process right now. His only crime was that he fought for his people's rights.
Disobeying the orders of the military, whether they are reasonable or not is a crime in Sri Lanka. The punishment for which, is that they would disappear in a white van and there will be no information on him.

Shanmugampillai Jayapalan, famously known as VIS Jayapalan in the Tamil literary world, was born in Uduvil, Jaffna in north of Sri Lanka. He began his writing in the 70s while studying at the University of Jaffna and published his first anthology in 1986. Since then he has published at least 12 anthologies of poetry and short novels.
As the war escalated, he fled Sri Lanka in 1988 and was granted asylum in Norway.

District Court of Point Pedro in Jaffna on Wednesday dismissed the claim by the Sri Lankan military that the land, which the Urban Council of Valveddith-thu’rai (VVT) had chosen to build a public park at Theeruvil was a property that should belong to the SL military.
Legal sources in VVT said the civic body could now proceed with building the park which is situated at a key memorial site...

The letter praised Cameron for taking the time to visit the northern province, and for demonstrating conviction and firmness in issuing an ultimatum demanding that Rajapaksa "begin an inquiry into alleged war crimes by March or face international intervention..."
