At a gathering of war reporters in 1995, Peter Arnett summed up their shared experience in one sentence: "We were there and we cared." Not one of the armchair critics who spend so much time berating "the media" can say that.

(CHAPEL HILL, N.C.) - Salem-News.com Just behind the colonnade above the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and down the hill from the memorial to those who went down with the Maine, a group of old war correspondents awkwardly assembled at Arlington Cemetery recently to pay tribute to our own.

And here we stood trying to make some sense of what we'd done, especially in light of all those who never returned.

ODVA Will Commemorate Anniversary of Iraq War

Oregon House Speaker Dave Hunt and State Representative Sal Esquival are scheduled to speak.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Afghan-Iraq Freedom Memorial The Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs will hold a special wreath laying ceremony Thursday at 1:00 p.m., to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the Iraq War and to honor those who have served.

The public ceremony will take place at the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom Memorial on the department grounds located at 700 Summer Street N.E. in Salem.

U.S. Casualties Mounting in Afghanistan

Four of the deaths happened in Kot, and one in Kabul, Afghanistan.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Negative shot of troops in Afghanistan The U.S. casualty tables are continuing to shift toward the conflict in Afghanistan, and this report is possibly the only one we have issued that listed no members of the U.S. military killed in Iraq.

Three soldiers from Illinois, a Marine Staff Sergeant and an Air Force Staff Sergeant were killed in recent days. All but one of the deaths was combat-related.

Some Military Veterans Will Receive Cash Payment

Disabled veterans that are in receipt of VA Compensation and Pension (C&P) will automatically receive a cash payment of $250.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Guard photo in Afghanistan President Obama has signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Congressionally approved legislation includes tax-related provisions providing cash payments to certain veterans.

The Economic Recovery Payment only will be paid by the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Railroad Retirement Board.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Months before D-Day June 6, 1944 the Combat Infantrymen who would be storming the beaches at Omaha and Utah were shown pictures and sand table models of machine gun nests, light artillery positions, heavy artillery, barb wire strings up to 6 ft tall, tank traps and every other conceivable defensive obstacle.

They were certainly told that they would have casualties. At the same time they were assured that they individually would prevail but not those who did not take their training seriously especially those who for whatever reason didn’t feel like obeying their sergeants or officers.
