Two Die in Crash East of Newport

Two more people were injured in the double fatal crash on Highway 20.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Fatal crash A Seal Rock Couple died in a two-vehicle head-on crash Friday afternoon on Highway 20 about twenty miles east of Newport.

Oregon State Police troopers say that around 5:20 p.m. Friday, a 1986 Cadillac De Ville operated by 86-year old Jack Whipple, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 20 when, according to witnesses, it began to pass another vehicle.

Coast Guard Assists Disabled Vessel off Oregon Coast

There are no reported injuries at this time, and no information as to the cause of the flooding.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Coast Guard helicopter The Coast Guard has responded to the distressed fishing vessel Master Chris after reports that it is taking on water off the Coast of Yaquina Bay, Ore., Sunday.

Motor lifeboats from Depoe Bay and Yaquina Bay, Ore., as well as a rescue helicopter from Northbend, Ore., are on scene with the vessel at this time.

Commercial Skipper Pleads Guilty, Sentenced in Crab Pot Thefts

OSP Fish & Wildlife Division still has about 65 crab pots stored at the OSP Newport office while troopers continue to find their owners.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - OSP troopers and recovered stolen crab pots In August 2008, OSP Senior Trooper Carla Urbigkeit was contacted by a Newport Bayfront commercial skipper reporting some of his commercial crab pots were being offloaded from a different vessel, the Blue Belle, bringing in pots at the close of the ocean commercial Dungeness crab season.

Police Seek Person Who Dropped Box of Deer Heads in Newport Parking Lot

Public's help sought in OSP Fish & Wildlife investigation of deer heads Left in Newport parking lot.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - deer heads discovered in the parking lot of the Newport Walmart store The Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division is asking for the public's help to identify the person responsible for dumping a cardboard box Wednesday morning containing deer heads in a Newport-area parking lot.

Sergeant Todd Thompson with the OSP Fish & Wildlife Division in Newport, says it was discovered Wednesday at approximately 11:45 a.m.

Police Plan DUII Saturation Patrols

The annual Newport Seafood and Wine Festival is being held in Newport during the weekend, and Highway 20 has historically had a lot of traffic.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - OSP cars On Friday, February 20, 2009, and Saturday, February 21, 2009, the Benton County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Oregon State Police, will participate in a DUII saturation patrol.

The focus will be on Highway 20, between Corvallis and the Lincoln County line.

Coast Guard Rescues Surfers in Newport, Oregon (VIDEO)

The names of the surfers were not immediately available.

(SEATTLE) - Oregon's Yaquina Head Coast Guard officials say a man and a girl were hoisted from the rocks at Yaquina Head, Oregon, Sunday by one of their helicopter crews.

The Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend, Oregon, was contacted by Lincoln County dispatch at 2:32 PM and advised that three surfers were trapped on the rocks at Agate Beach near Yaquina Head.

The Coast Guard says crews from their stations at Depoe Bay and Yaquina Bay launched two 47-foot boat crews while an HH-65 crew from Coast Guard Air Facility at Newport was diverted to the scene.

Aquariums Swap Harbor Seals and Hope for Pups

Mammalogists at Oregon Coast Aquarium and Seattle Aquarium collaborate.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - “Q” the Harbor Seal from the Seattle Aquarium awaits introduction to “Swap” and “Boots,” two female harbor seals at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The Oregon Coast Aquarium exchanged a female harbor seal for a male harbor seal from the Seattle Aquarium in hopes of producing pups. The Oregon Coast Aquarium exchanged 22 year old female, “Pinky,” for 9 1/2 year old male, “Q”, who is currently becoming acclimated to his holding pool.

In a few days, “Q” will be introduced to the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s four females, two of which, “Swap and “Boots” are potential mates. The breeding loan will last two years. If pups aren’t produced in that time the animals will return to their homes at their original aquariums.

“We’ll bring the other seals in after he’s calmed a bit,” said Judy Tuttle, Oregon Coast Aquarium Curator of Mammals. “Meanwhile, he can interact with them between the gates and the females have already been vocalizing to him.” Tuttle said the male will be with them all winter in hopes they will produce spring 2010 pups.

Portland Man Swept From Jetty at Newport Remains Missing

Search suspended for man near Newport Jetty.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Coast Guard rescue Coast Guard officials say the search for a 23-year old man who was swept from a jetty near Newport, Oregon, was suspended at 5:47 PM Sunday.

Members of the Coast Guard, Oregon State Police and Newport Fire Department scoured the area by foot, boat and helicopter for six hours before suspending the search.

"Searchers looked for this man longer than the estimated survivability time," said Jeff Griffin, a watchstander at the Coast Guard Command Center in Seattle.

Body of Eugene Man Discovered at Surf Line Near Devil`s Punch Bowl

Police are trying to find a man who turned in the victim's cell phone, Ipod, and flashlight to the Inn at Otter Crest's front desk.

(OTTER ROCK, Ore.) - Devils Punchbowl State Park The fully clothed body of a Eugene man was discovered on the beach this morning on the rocks above the surf line at the base of a cliff between the Inn at Otter Crest and Devil's Punch Bowl State Natural Area.

Oregon State Police and the Lincoln County Medical Examiner are completing the investigation into the death. They say a preliminary determination by the medical examiner indicates that the man died from drowning.
