Newport, Oregon to Hold Tsunami Evacuation Drill Oct. 11

The challenge of safely escorting several hundred people across the Oregon Coast’s busiest highway has become a community-wide effort.

Growing awareness of the potential dangers of a major earthquake and tsunami has prompted Oregon State University and community leaders in the coastal town of Newport to expand the scope of their annual tsunami evacuation drill.

(NEWPORT, OR) -
A section from a huge dock that ripped loose from its moorings in the northern Japanese city of Misawa during the massive earthquake and tsunami in March of 2011 will become part of an exhibit in Newport, Ore.
A piece of the huge structure has been saved and will be on display at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center by early next year.

Kids Get Surf and Stewardship at Otter Rock and Roll

Death Investigation - Ocean Shore near Beverly Beach State Park in Lincoln County

The deceased had no identification and appeared to have been in the ocean for a few days.
(NEWPORT, Ore.) -
Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and Lincoln County Medical Examiner, is continuing the investigation into the death of an unidentified female found Saturday morning on a Lincoln County beach near Beverly Beach State Park.
There is no evidence at this time that the death is associated with a crime.

On Wednesday, October 5, 2011 Oregon law enforcement officials released information regarding the search for missing 19-year old Cody Myers of Lafayette, Oregon and asked everyone to continue to be on the lookout for Myers, two vehicles including his missing white 1999 Plymouth Breeze four-door displaying Oregon license 025 CCH, and two suspects sought in connection with a murder investigation in Everett, Washington.

Breaching Whale Strikes Sailboat Near Astoria

Nobody was injured, the vessel had been participating in the Oregon International Offshore Race to Victoria, B.C.
(ASTORIA, Ore.) -
A sailboat was struck by a breaching whale near the coast of Astoria, Thursday. The vessel and its crew were taking part in a race to Victoria, B.C., when the whale surfaced.
Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a report from the 38-foot sailing vessel L'Orca at 9:30 a.m. after the whale breached the surface of the water and crushed the rigging and mast of the boat when it fell back into the water.
