Lingering attitudes from that era keep life dangerous for women there, but some are rising out of silence with a song that makes fun of the burqa, a garment worn by women in Afghanistan that covers all of their body and face.

Evans, Schelske Agree to Split Money, Work Out Living Arrangements

The couple married in 1993 and have three children.

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) - Sara Evans Country music singer-songwriter Sara Evans and her husband Craig Schelske a native of Salem, Oregon appeared in court Thursday that resulted in a mutual agreement between the two in matters involving their finances and children.

Their divorce was well-publicized in the media after Evans charged that Schelske was emotionally and verbally abusive, drank heavily, and watched porn frequently in their home.

Oregon Composer Featured in November Concert

Willamette University Composer-In-Residence John Peel celebrates his 60th birthday with a performance of one of his works by the Salem Chamber Orchestra (SCO).

(SALEM) - Violin Willamette University Composer-In-Residence John Peel celebrates his 60th birthday with a performance of one of his works by the Salem Chamber Orchestra (SCO).

The November 18th and 19th concerts feature Peel's "Three French Texts for Voice and Chamber Orchestra." Mezzo Soprano Allison Swensen-Mitchell will join the orchestra.

Peel, a Salem resident, is a nationally and internationally known composer. His works have been performed and commissioned by major symphony orchestras including the Seattle Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Oregon Symphony.

Application Deadline Nears For Salem Public Library`s 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands

(SALEM) - Guital art The Salem Public Library is looking for the best local bands for its 2nd annual Battle of the Bands competition. The event was a sell-out show in 2005, giving six area bands excellent exposure and a chance to win new fans.

Ellen Whyte and her Big Band Will Play for Local School

(SALEM) - Ellen Whyte Award winning Blues vocalist Ellen Whyte and her Big Band, with Salem guitarist, Garry Meziere will perform a benefit concert for Highland Elementary School Saturday, October 7th.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy Ellen’s entire 9-piece band, complete with horn section. Organizer Rick Stucky says they hope people come to take in a great show, enjoy great music and dance to one of the Northwest’s best Blues groups while supporting a great cause.

Corvallis Fall Festival This Weekend

The 34th annual Corvallis Fall Festival takes place this weekend in Central Park.

(CORVALLIS) - Laura Kemp performer and songwriter The Corvallis Fall Festival includes a major arts and crafts show, children's activities, 1K, 5K and 10K runs, music entertainment such as blues, West African drum and dance, folk, jazz, funk, and more.

Plus, Saturday night there will be a street dance from 6:00-10:00 PM. The group Stairway Denied will perform live music from the legendary rock band, Led Zeppelin.

The festival is free, and runs Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

234 Army Band to Give Free Concert in Salem

The 234 is lead by Unit Commander/Bandmaster Chief Warrant Officer James Powell of Oregon City and First Sergeant James Langford of Salem.

(SALEM) - "Oregon's Own" 234 Army Band will perform a free concert at Salem's Historic Elsinore Theatre, located at 170 High St SE, on Sunday July 16th at 3:00 PM.

The Salem concert is the first in a series of 10 performed as a tribute to Oregon Communities for their support of the Oregon Army and Air National Guard.

The series will be performed over the next three summers in several communities throughout Oregon and will feature music that runs gamut of musical genres from Marches, Classic Concert Band, Big Band Jazz and Rock & Roll.

Music Scholarships Awarded to Eight Salem-Keizer High School Students

The Harold J. Withnell Music Scholarship-named in honor of Dick Withnell's late father, a high school band teacher, was inspired by the movie, Mr. Holland's Opus.

(SALEM) - Eight Salem-Keizer high school students were presented with the Harold J. Withnell Music Scholarship.

The awards were handed out on May 16th by Dick and Gayle Withnell.

Along with the student finalists, district music supervisor Karl Raschkes, music teachers and principals from the respective high schools, parents and community representatives were in attendance.
