Local Students to be Honored For Turning Their Lives Around

(SALEM) - A scene from the 2005 awards event A student from each middle and high school in Salem and Keizer will be honored with a Turnaround Achievement Award at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, May 24th at Willamette Lutheran Homes, 7693 Wheatland Road, in Keizer.

The award is given to students who have made a significant effort to turn their lives around and get back on track to success.

The award was created more than twelve years ago by Don and Ann Lebold, owners of Town and Country Lanes in Keizer and business partners with Salem-Keizer, as a way to recognize and encourage students to continue to seek life's positive rewards.

(SALEM) - image: crime scene The Marion County Sheriff`s Office Cold Case Squad is asking for the public`s help in locating a possible witness relating to an unsolved homicide investigation from the early 1980s.

The possible witness has been identified as Don Smith, who is believed to have resided at 1085 Madison Street NE, Salem, Oregon, during the early 1980s.

Detectives Seize Drugs, Guns From Residence, 5-year-old Child Taken Into Protective Custody

(SALEM) - Marion County Street Crimes Detectives, assisted by Salem police and Oregon State Police investigators, served a search warrant at 4527 Boulder Dr SE in Salem as part of an ongoing investigation on Wednesday night.

Sheriff`s spokesman Kevin Rau said detectives arrested 30-year-old Manuel Morales-Beiza and 21-year-old Obet Gomez-Beiza.

Investigators seized 2.5 ounces of methamphetamine and 5 ounces of heroin from the home.

Safety Town and Cautious Kids Program Registration Begin Monday

(SALEM) - A kids safety town set up in the state of Kentucky Registration for the Salem-Keizer School Districts popular summer safety programs begins Monday.

Two different programs are offered: Safety Town and Cautious Kids.

Safety Town, for ages 4 and 5, is an eight-day program covering the major areas of early safety education.

It features a miniature town, complete with streets, intersections, crosswalks and buildings.

Analysis Finds Salem-Keizer is Lowest Spending District on Central Administration

The analysis also found that Salem-Keizer is at or above average in spending on instructional and support services to students.

(SALEM) - Salem-Keizer students at Leslie Middle School A recent analysis of school districts around the State found that Salem-Keizer was the lowest spending school district on central administration in 2004-05 when compared to Oregon districts with 6,500 or more students.

This independent analysis conducted by Clem Lausberg, Ph'D, looked at expenditures of school districts in Oregon by using information from the Oregon Department of Education Data Base Initiative.

Amnesty For Late Fees, Dog Licenses, Vaccinations Offered During May Event at Humane Society

All dog owners and keepers in Marion County are required by law to purchase a license when a dog reaches six months of age.

(SALEM) - An event next month will help you protect your families best friend!

Marion County Dog Control is offering amnesty for late fees and licensing violations as well as licenses and vaccinations from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Saturday, May 6, at the Willamette Humane Society, 4246 Turner Rd SE.

Dr. Susan MacCarthy, DVM, will be providing low-cost vaccinations, health exams, microchipping and flea products for both cats and dogs from her mobile clinic.

Rabies vaccinations for dogs will be $10.50.

Buena Vista Ferry Reopens For 2006 Season

(Buena Vista) - The ferry at Buena Vista Begins operation at 7:00 AM Wednesday morning, commencing servide across the Willamette River for the 2006 season.

A Marion County Public Works spokesman says the seasonal opening of the Buena Vista Ferry on Wednesday, April 19th will run from April 19th through October 29th, 2006.

The operating schedule is:

. Wednesday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
. Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM
