Mark Gilman Named Volcanoes Radio Announcer

The Volcanoes begin their season June 15 at home with a pre-season game against the Corvallis Knights.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - volcanoes logoLong time Salem sportscaster Mark Gilman will be calling Salem-Keizer Volcanoes baseball games beginning this Northwest League season.

The team has announced that Gilman will succeed Pat Lafferty, who retired after 11 seasons as the Volcanoes’ radio announcer. “This is an exciting opportunity for me,” said Gilman.

Mariners Place Putz on 15-Day DL With Rib Injury

Seattle has selected right-handed pitcher Roy Corcoran from AAA Tacoma to take his spot on the roster.

(SEATTLE) - Mariners Putz Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the Mariners have placed right-handed pitcher J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list.

The Mariners had a precautionary MRI exam done today. It revealed that Putz has mild costochondritis on his right side. Costochondritis is inflammation where cartilage attaches to a rib.

Eastern Oregon Inks Four More Volleyball Players

The Mountie volleyball team will look to improve on a 4th place Cascade Conference finish last season.

(LA GRANDE, Ore.) - eastern oregon volleyballFollowers of EOU Volleyball will have some nice new faces to meet next fall as Head Coach Kaki McLean has inked seven new volleyball players for 2008.

Julie Butterfield and Noelle Carstens will both be transferring to EOU from Walla Walla Community College while freshman Allison Groom from Sunset High School and Western Oregon University transfer Jessica Baty round out this years recruiting class.

Three-Run Homer Lifts Beavers Over Ducks

Kelly Dyer earned the win for the Beavers, improving her record to 14-11.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - Ashley KivettFreshman Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) went 2-for-4 in her first game at Howe Field, pacing all Oregon State hitters with four RBI, including a three-run shot over right center, to boost the Beavers to a 7-4 win over Oregon on Wednesday afternoon.

Oregon State (23-16, 2-2 Pac-10) took the early one-game lead in the Dodge Civil War series behind nine hits, while Oregon (25-14, 0-3 Pac-10) rallied late in the seventh, earning four of the team’s eight hits.

Crean Takes Over at Indiana

Crean built the Marquette program to the level where it has remained one of college basketball's best since 2001.

(BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ) - Tom CreanTom Crean, who averaged over 20 wins a season in nine years at Marquette and led the Golden Eagles to five NCAA Tournament appearances including the 2003 Final Four, has been named the 28th head basketball coach in Indiana University history, IU President Michael McRobbie and Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan announced on Wednesday.

In each of his final seven seasons, Crean's team posted at least 19 wins and earned a postseason berth. Over those seven years, he compiled an aggregate record of 160-68 (.702).

Western Oregon Takes Down Corban, 7-3

The Wolves improved to 20-12 on the year with the win and have now won nine of its last 10 games.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - corban western oregonTyler Moore had three hits, including a double and a home run as Western Oregon picked up a 7-3 non-conference baseball win over Corban College on Tuesday in Salem.

Western Oregon had 12 hits in the game, including two each by Joe Pratt, Drew Humphrey and Ryan Lewis. Craig Spicer, Daniel Flores and Rondie Taylor had two hits each to lead Corban.

Lopez Twins Headed to NBA Draft

(STANFORD, Calif.) - lopez twinsStanford sophomores Brook Lopez and Robin Lopez have announced their intent to enter the 2008 NBA Draft and will begin the process of hiring an agent.

Brook Lopez was recently named a third team All-American selection by the Associated Press. Robin Lopez was tabbed an All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention selection and was also voted to the five-member Pac-10 All-Defensive team.

Sean Sutton - Oklahoma State Part Ways

Sutton said, “I want the fans and my OSU family to know how much I have appreciated their support over the last 17 years."

(STILLWATER, Okla.) - Sean SuttonOklahoma State University Vice President of Athletics Mike Holder announced Tuesday that he and OSU head men’s basketball coach Sean Sutton mutually agreed on a new direction for the OSU program.

After careful consideration both came to the conclusion it would be in the best interest of the program for Sutton to resign. Sutton leaves OSU with an overall record of 39-29. During his 17 years at OSU the Cowboys compiled 387 wins.
