(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) - Benson's three-point lead over Hornaday is the closest in the 14-year history of the NASCAR Truck Series going into the final race and the second closest in a NASCAR national series since the current points system was adopted in 1975. The closest point margin with one race remaining was in 1979 when Darrel Waltrip had a two-point lead over Richard Petty. Petty went on to win the 1979 NASCAR Winston Cup championship.
By winning the 2008 title, Ron Hornaday would become the first driver in Truck Series history to win four championships. The only other drivers to win at least four championships in NASCAR’s three elite divisions (Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Truck Series) are Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - The Western Oregon University men’s basketball team will open the 2008-09 season at home against Dixie State Saturday Nov. 15th, at 3:00 PM, in the Physical Education Building. This will be the first game of the season for both teams.
The Wolves return three starters, which all averaged in double-figures, to a team that went 15-12 during the 2007-08 regular season and finished tied for fifth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with an 8-10 record.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - The Oregon State volleyball program is pleased to add five for 2009, announced Thursday by head coach Taras Liskevych. The first three additions ready for release are Megan McBride, Jessica Roberts and Alyssa O’Neil.
Megan, a 6-1 setter/opposite hitter, was named to the 2007 Washington All-State Class 3A team. Jessi, a 6-1 middle blocker/outside hitter, is enrolled at Oregon State. Alyssa, a 5-9 defensive specialist/outside hitter, joins the Oregon State volleyball program after helping lead her 2008 high school team to a second place finish at the Oregon Class 6A Tournament.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The Red Deer Rebels scored three times on the power play and skated away with a 6-2 win over the Portland Winter Hawks on Saturday night in front of 3981 at the Memorial Coliseum.
Cass Mappin scored two power play goals and added an assist to lead the Rebels, while Carter Smith chipped in one goal and two assists and Landon Ferraro added a goal and an assist. Josh Cowen and Brennen Wray rounded out the scoring for Red Deer.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - The Oregon State women’s soccer team nearly handed No. 2 UCLA its first loss of the season, however, the Bruins captured a 2-1, double overtime victory over the Beavers in action at Paul Lorenz Field on Friday night. With the loss, Oregon State falls to 6-10-2 on the season, 1-6-1 in conference play, while UCLA improved to 17-0-2, 8-0-0 in Pac-10 play.
“I am extremely proud of the team tonight,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “UCLA is a team that is capable of winning a national title and we nearly pulled out the victory. It’s a testament to how hard the team has been working throughout the season. We’re a young squad and I think this type of effort shows the future of Oregon State soccer is bright.”

(HAMPTON, Ga.) - Ron Hornaday and the Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) No. 33 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) Chevrolet Silverado team closed to 31 points behind leader Johnny Benson with a second-place finish on Saturday in the E-Z-GO 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Hornaday led a race-high 110 of the 130 laps, gaining 10 bonus points in the race won by KHI teammate Ryan Newman.
“My hat is off to everybody at KHI,” Hornaday said. “This is what it’s all about and that’s what that truck is supposed to be running like. I just missed the corner off of (turn) two on the final lap racing Newman side-by-side for the win, but the VFW Chevrolet was awesome. I have to thank Rick Ren (crew chief) and all the guys on this team, Camping World and VFW. This is for all of our military over there in Iraq. It was a good day for us. Salem-News.com Sports (October 27, 2008 12:56)Ryan Newman Goes to Victory Lane in First Truck Series Start for KHI Salem-News.com SPORTSNewman’s win is the first for him at Atlanta Motor Speedway and he becomes the 19th driver in NASCAR history to win in all three series. (HAPMTON, Ga.) - Ryan Newman, driving in his first NASCAR Truck Series race, drove the No. 2 American Commercial Lines (ACL) Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Chevrolet to Victory Lane at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It is the first win of the season for the No. 2 KHI team as well as crew chief Ernie Cope’s first NASCAR victory. Newman ran among the top three for the entire race and took the lead from KHI teammate Ron Hornaday for the final time with seven laps remaining. The two continued to a one-two finish, the second for KHI this season.
“It was a great day for me running in the Truck Series for the first time here at Atlanta Motor Speedway,” said Newman in victory lane. “I want to thank the fans for coming out as well as Kevin and DeLana for giving me this opportunity to run the No. 2 and put the Ryan Newman Foundation on the side of the truck. I also want to thank American Commercial Lines for all of their support. I didn’t really save my stuff. I just took it for what it was worth. I was pretty amazed that I got the opportunity to run them down and luckily it stayed green because we had two really great race trucks.”

October 3, 1936: John Heisman, longtime coach and namesake of the coveted Heisman Trophy, passes away at 66. The Cleveland, Ohio, native originated the hidden-ball play, invented the center snap, led the fight to reduce the game from halves to quarters, and led the movement to legalize the pass in 1906. Heisman played at Brown (1887-1889) and Penn (1890-1891), and began his coaching career at Oberlin (Ohio) in 1892. After stints at seven other schools, his overall career coaching record stands at 185-70-17. Heisman was preparing to write a history of football at the time of his death.
OTHER NOTABLE DATES:
September 29, 1973: Texas hands intrastate rival Texas Tech its only loss of the season with a 28- 12 defeat in Austin. The Longhorns go on to win the Southwest Conference crown, but Tech (No. 11) finishes the season with a Gator Bowl win, landing three spots ahead of the Longhorns (No. 14) in the final AP rankings.
