CORVALLIS, Ore. - OREGON STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER NEARLY KNOCKS OFF NO. 2 UCLA

Beavers fall to undefeated Bruins in double overtime.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women’s soccer team nearly handed No. 2 UCLA its first loss of the season, however, the Bruins captured a 2-1, double overtime victory over the Beavers in action at Paul Lorenz Field on Friday night. With the loss, Oregon State falls to 6-10-2 on the season, 1-6-1 in conference play, while UCLA improved to 17-0-2, 8-0-0 in Pac-10 play.

“I am extremely proud of the team tonight,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “UCLA is a team that is capable of winning a national title and we nearly pulled out the victory. It’s a testament to how hard the team has been working throughout the season. We’re a young squad and I think this type of effort shows the future of Oregon State soccer is bright.”

After a scoreless first half in which Oregon State outshot the Bruins, 6-4, UCLA connected on the first goal of the match in the 78th minute. Off of an Oregon State turnover, McCall Zerbroni connected on a shot from 35 yards out that deflected off the post and barely crossed the goal line to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

Oregon State answered right back as Courtney Wetzel connected on a free kick to tie the score. After a Bruins foul, Wetzel delivered a perfect strike from 35 yards out that found the upper-right hand corner of the net to knot the score at 1-1 in the 88th minute.

The goal was the first of the season for Wetzel and marked only the fourth goal scored against the Bruins this season.

With both teams unable to get on the board in the first overtime, UCLA managed a goal in the 104th minute to win the match. Off a cross from Lauren Barnes, Catherine Calvert delivered a shot that deflected off the post and into the back of the net to give the Bruins the win.

The Beavers hung with the Bruins all night as Oregon State and UCLA each recorded six corner kicks on the night. For the contest, UCLA has a 21-12 edge in shots but only a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

Colleen Boyd played well in goal for Oregon State in the loss while making four saves as Ashley Thompson picked up the win for UCLA with four stops.

Oregon State will close out the 2008 season on Sunday, Nov. 9, as the Beavers host defending national champion USC at 11:00 a.m. The contest marks the final home game for midfielder Julie Arredondo, who will be honored prior to the start of the match.
