PORTLAND, Ore. - The Red Deer Rebels scored three times on the power play and skated away with a 6-2 win over the Portland Winter Hawks on Saturday night in front of 3981 at the Memorial Coliseum. Cass Mappin scored two power play goals and added an assist to lead the Rebels, while Carter Smith chipped in one goal and two assists and Landon Ferraro added a goal and an assist. Josh Cowen and Brennen Wray rounded out the scoring for Red Deer. Portland got on the scoreboard first when Colin Reddin took a feed from Brad Ross and finished with a wrister over the blocker of Darcy Kuemper just 2:40 into the opening period. After Red Deer scored four consecutive goals, Radim Valchar scored a power play goal, once again set up by Ross, to cut the lead in half at 4-2 halfway through the third, but Red Deer would score twice more to round out the scoring. For just the second time this season, Portland out-shot an opponent, getting 32 shots while surrendering 24. Kuemper made 30 saves in net for Red Deer while Keith Hamilton stopped 18 in his first home start of the season. On special teams, Red Deer went 3 for 6 on the power play while the Hawks went 1 for 4. Next up, Portland will finish their four games in five night stretch with a home game against the Kamloops Blazers. Game time is 5:00 with the pre-game show beginning on AM 1550 KKAD at 4:40.
