(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - Led by first-year head coach Linus Rhode, the Oregon State women’s soccer team began preparation for the 2008 season on Thursday as the Beavers took to the practice field for the first time. The Beavers will continue the two-a-day sessions until Monday, August 18, when Oregon State hosts Trinity Western in an exhibition contest at 7:00 PM.
“Obviously, I think everyone is excited to get on the field and get the season started,” Rhode said. “We have a big group of newcomers coming in so the first few sessions are going to be spent getting a feel for one another and to see where everyone stands.”
Oregon State, which features 10 newcomers, returns six starters and 12 letter-winners from last year’s squad that finished with a record of 7-10-3 on the season.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - After starting the previous two races in the pole position, Josh Hurley, 23, Cooper City, Fl., claimed first place at Portland International Raceway (PIR) today in the third race of the Jetta TDI Cup series. Starting from the second position in today's race, Hurley raced ahead of 29 other clean diesel vehicles in the only race stop on the West Coast. Finishing second was Liam Kenney, 16, Sterling, Va., and Northwest driver David Jurca, 22, Federal Way, Wash., rounding out the top three.
"I am really happy with the win today, words can't describe it. I was actually a little choked up on the cool down lap," said Hurley. "To put the Gunther Volkswagen Jetta TDI up front really means a lot after getting two pole positions coming into here. I am absolutely ecstatic."

(SALEM, Ore.) - The grand-daddy and largest by far of all of Oregon's three-on-three basketball events, the Hoopla, is the basketball competition in Salem that closes the street in front of the state capitol each year.
It was in full swing Saturday, and in addition to the great basketball, Hoopla 2008 features many things for Oregon’s youngsters, including their free Kids Clinic and a number of contests.
Gerald Moore of Portland, Oregon is one of the players who has graduated from college and is now seeking to begin his career as a professional basketball player. He says the significance of the role model is not to be overlooked, and he says a large number of kids are staying out of trouble every day by vesting time in sports.

Ore.) - After leading the nation in home runs per game and helping Willamette University rank first in team home runs per game, junior first baseman Kyle Stalker (Bellevue, WA/Sammamish HS) has been chosen Third Team All-America for NCAA Division III, as selected by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Stalker set school records with 22 home runs and 63 runs batted in this season.
Stalker ranked first in Division III with 0.56 home runs per game. He was second in the nation with 1.62 RBIs per game.
