(BERKELEY, Calif.) - CA Prop 23 Update: Proposition 23 would suspend AB32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which is set to be implemented in California on January 1, 2012. As we reported yesterday, AB 32 was signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger after clearing the California State Legislature. It is California's landmark clean air legislation. Proposition 23 intends to halt this environmental legislation, and the support the measure is receiving from oil companies may make Prop-23 the most highly funded proposition in California's history. Prop-23 would freeze the provisions of AB 32 until California's unemployment rate drops to 5.5% or below for four consecutive quarters. The state's unemployment rate currently hovers around 12%. In the previous report we related how Prop. 23 had already received millions in contributions from several different petroleum marketers associations. Citing figures from the California secretary of state, Maplight.org reports Texas-based Valero gave an additional $1 million contribution to 'Yes on 23' last night. Valero's contributions now total $5,075,315. On Thursday, Texas-based Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company contributed $500K to 'Yes on 23.' Tesoro's contributions now total $2,040,637. Data facts: Opponents of Prop. 23 have still raised almost three times as much with $30.1 million compared to $10.7 million in total raised by supporters. Based on the latest campaign finance filings published by the California Secretary of State supporters of Prop. 23 received a total of $7,000 in contributions from several different petroleum marketers associations.
