Marijuana Edibles and Oils for Sale to Oregon Adults

A big step for recreational marijuana use in Oregon

(SALEM, Ore.) - You may have noticed your neighborhood medical marijuana dispensary was very busy yesterday. That was the case at most Salem, Oregon locations, with full parking lots nearly everywhere I visited.

All the hubbub was a new milestone: as of yesterday, Oregonians 21+ are able to purchase marijuana edible, extract and oil products, in set amounts, as the much anticipated Temporary Oregon Administrative Rules under OAR 333-008-1500 went into effect.

Adults are now legally allowed to buy one unit of a single-serving, low-dose cannabinoid edible per day. This can include more than one edible in the same package, but the total THC cannot not exceed 15 mg. They can also purchase oil, prepackaged, not more than 1000 mg. Medical marijuana patients have no changes in what they can purchase.

"People have been waiting for this day," said Crystal Young, manager of CannaMedicine.

"They are really excited about trying some of these products, and we're excited about sharing information, and our love of this wonderful plant."

Many "rec" customers are not picking up cannabis on their way to a party, but are actually attempting to solve a medical ailment, though they aren't considered patients if they don't have their Oregon Medical Marijuana Program permit.

"When someone lets me know they have a medical issue, I let them know the benefits of getting their OMMP permit," Young said.

"There are so many people suffering with chronic pain and terrible diseases, it's great that we give the medical option in Oregon. In fact, if it weren't for medical, none of this would even be happening."

Budtenders at CannaMedicine were enthusiastic, at the ready with answers and suggestions as customers speedily lobbed new queries their way, settled the transaction, and offered them a cup of tea or coffee before leaving the dispensary. That's service.

Not Rocket Science

THC makes people high: eating, drinking, smoking, vaping. Any way you use it. How high you get depends on several factors including your unique mental and physical self combined with the type and strength of the cannabis product.

The effects of THC on different people are absolutely not equal, so pay attention to your body and don’t overdo. Some products won’t have much effect; others will be surprisingly strong. If it’s got much THC (more than 6%) there will be some effect, even if slight.

If you are new to edibles, you need to be aware that while you quickly feel the effects of smoked or vaped marijuana, edibles take longer to take effect. Usually up to an hour, but the State warns that it can take up to four hours. That is extremely slow, and unusual, but not impossible.

Therefore, if you are a new cannabis edibles user, it is advisable to ingest less than the 15 mg per unit limit, then wait at least 90 minutes (and up to four hours) before ingesting more.

It's common to underestimate the power of an edible because of the time factor. Be patient. It's better to be safe, and enjoy your high, than overdoing and sleeping through your party.

What about the Children?

The State reminds the public that, “Marijuana can make children very sick” with posters throughout dispensaries and a flyer with every purchase. This statement is repeated and reinforced in so many ways and places that I feel confident every adult in Oregon that is even mildly interested in cannabis is now properly alerted to this threat.

Kids are naturally attracted to anything that looks “yummy”. Parents are expected to be on top of this, and to know better than to leave cannabis in their reach, of any variety.

Considering the real risks, an even more serious warning flyer should be mandated for each sale of orange baby aspirin, chocolate flavored laxatives, and every type and variety of alcohol.

Marijuana is not new. Smoking marijuana is not new. Oregon’s relationship with marijuana is not new. Parents have been “dealing with marijuana” far before OHA decided they should, but I’m sure they appreciate the reminders.

It’s been soundly proven that cannabis is not a gateway drug, as prior decades of propaganda so grandly portrayed it. Using marijuana does not lead to drug or alcohol abuse, it simply does not. The Reefer Madness attitude of years gone by is dissipating, and people are demanding truth instead.

Should you keep your cannabis out of the reach of children? Yes. In fact, keep it locked in an area that children cannot see or reach. Simple. If you do have an emergency, call the Poison Center Hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

Prevent a Buzz Kill

Cannabis use is not for everyone, and using cannabis is not right for every occasion. Know when to consume.

It is a terrific product for relief of many medical ailments, symptoms, and disease. It can be an uplifting recreational product that gives party-goers a legal (and safer) choice vs alcohol. Already, every state with legal use has had great success in reducing drug crime and alcohol-related crashes.

But, lest you forget, it is a mistake to get behind the wheel if you’re stoned. Bad decisions are bad decisions, and safety should be of highest importance.

Besides, the police are actively seeking stoners. There’s nothing more sobering than red and blue lights flashing in your rear-view mirror, and you may not pass their DUII test. Don’t take the chance. Plan to have a designated driver, call a Taxi, or stay the night at your location. Enjoy your cannabis, and your life. Nothing can beat that.
