Man Heralded for Curing Cancer Seeks Asylum in Europe

Canadian authorities have still not laid charges ten days after the police action against Rick Simpson.

(SALEM, Ore.) - There’s a man from Athol, Nova Scotia, Canada who has caused a stir around the world. About five years ago, he made the shocking claim to have cured cancer. As unbelievable as that sounds, there is viable evidence to support his claim.

You may not have heard of Rick Simpson, many people have not yet had the chance. He’s well known globally in the cannabis community, but the general public has been slow in receiving his whole story.

Simpson makes and distributes a medicinal cannabis extract popularly known as “hemp oil”. He does so without any profit motive. Many patients have claimed to be cured of their ailments, often terminal cancer, by miniscule amounts of this extract.

This pioneer for alternative health solutions was in Europe in November, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) took the opportunity to raid Simpson’s home in Canada.

As his house, office, and garden were being trampled through by police, Simpson was accepting an International Freedom Fighter award, thousands of miles away.

“While he has been touring in Europe his residence was raided by the RCMP and rumor has it the DEA was involved as well,” explains friend Desmond Wynnd.

January 2010 Issue

“The newest issue of "High Times" that came out a week or two ago has a lengthy article on his story and it's felt by many this is what prompted the latest raid. He is now seeking political asylum in Europe.”

The 22nd Annual High Times Cannabis Cup was just held in Amsterdam, and there Rick Simpson received the acclaimed honor of "Freedom Fighter of the Year". The special event came on the heels of a European tour Simpson had just completed.

Jack Herer, well-known as “the Hemperor”, author of Emperor Wears No Clothes, had anxiously awaited joining Simpson for the tour in early fall. Sadly, Herer was afflicted with a heart attack in September and is in recovery, but his assistant Chuck Jacobs was able to attend in his stead. Jack Herer and Rick Simpson are of like minds in that they truly believe hemp can save the world. One person at a time.

For five years, Simpson has been diligently working on the behalf of saving lives, challenging the traditional remedies for skin cancer and other cancers, diabetes, as well as many chronic illnesses. He aspires to enlighten the medical community and bring the discussion of curing cancer to a new level. That discussion is widely believed to be more politically motivated than cure goal-oriented.

Though Rick Simpson has helped so many, there are forces that want to stop him, at any cost.

As of December 3rd, Canadian authorities had still not charged Simpson, ten days after the police action. Initially there were discrepancies in available information from the two involved agencies that carried out this police action.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police first claimed that such an action would have been undertaken by the Amherst Police Department, as Simpson’s home falls within their jurisdiction. Amherst PD denied that they incited this action when reached for comment, and deferred inquiry for detail to the RCMP.

Rick Simpson wrote, “If I return home, I will be arrested and put in jail without bail or medicine. I am not afraid of their jails but I cannot go without my medicine, the system has nothing that could help me with my conditions. So for me to return to Canada would be like committing suicide.

"I would be thrown in jail and denied my medicine and a short time later you would hear in the news that ‘Rick Simpson died of natural causes’.”

"It seems the goal is to keep me from returning home and they succeeded. But to what end? All hemp magazines on this planet are now telling their readers how to heal themselves with this wonderful medicine. If governments want to live in denial, it will be short-lived. We are gaining tens of thousands of followers every day. You cannot stop the truth.”

“For the time being, it seems I will be seeking asylum in Europe.”

The Canadian government’s lack of tolerance for marijuana has been building the last few years, a reaction, some believe, to America’s own drug war. Canadians are feeling the brunt.

“They're doing a great job directing hate toward Americans when it's undeserved. I haven't met a bad American yet. In the end, we have to take care of ourselves and each other,” Wynnd said.

One theory on limiting a person’s ability to share information is to incarcerate them. That’s a pretty easy solution. A fellow Canadian, Marc Emery, can vouch for that, out on bail for selling cannabis seeds. He is currently scheduled to be extradited to the United States for a sentence of five years in US federal prison.

Perpetrators of the incarceration strategy believe that eventually the subject may lose support of their advocates, the costs will mount up, and just getting through the drama of arrest, red tape and humiliation that follows will be enough to distract even the most passionate, motivated activists.

But Rick isn’t like “most” activists.

He’s been arrested twice in the past, and his medicinal Cannabis plants confiscated. Both times, he was able to reason with the judicial system and continue living freely. Where the maximum penalty has been 12 years imprisonment in one of these instances, the courts instead levied a $2,000 fine.

Most of us have been duped into completely and blindly accepting that there is no cure for cancer.
–Christian Laurette, producer

“Last time he was arrested, the judge wouldn't send him to jail because the judge believed it would be a crime to lock up Rick Simpson, it’s all public record,” said Wynnd.

“During his last trial he had doctors and patients lining up to testify for him. Even Narcotic officers have sent people to Rick so he could help them.”

“Mr. Simpson is in an unusual position, because unlike other people engaged in the drug trade, he was not engaged in trafficking for financial gain," said Judge Carole Beaton.

"He was engaged in an altruistic activity and was firm in his belief that he was helping others,” she said after Rick Simpson’s sentencing for his second offense in healing dying cancer patients with hemp oil.

Rick Simpson didn’t start out as a crusader to stamp out cancer. He started out as an average guy, first as a steel worker, then in maintenance at a hospital in the boiler room.

Simpson's Cannabis Conversion

In his early twenties, Simpson suffered through the loss of a cousin to cancer. That long, exasperating experience changed him forever. He heard some reports about hemp’s healing qualities, and wondered if things would have gone differently for his cousin, had hemp been an option.

For someone who had never even smoked marijuana, this was a very foreign, open-minded idea. The thought provoked some personal research though and later proved very beneficial.

After 25 years working maintenance at the hospital, Simpson was in a serious accident. He fell from a ladder causing a temporary nervous-system shutdown, within hours he developed an unbearable ringing in his ears.

The doctors tried to find a solution for over a year, and gave up. Not willing to accept his life sentence of daily drugs that altered his memory and other side effects, he asked about medical marijuana, to no avail. So, he began his own research, and experimented with making oil. What he discovered...worked.

To be clear, Rick Simpson's Hemp Oil isn’t hemp oil in the truest sense. Hemp is the Cannabis (marijuana) plant, specifically the stalk and leaves raised mainly for industrial use, with extremely low THC.

Not to be confused with hemp seed oil, a very different product, Rick Simpson’s healing hemp oil is a very pure cannabis extract made exclusively from high quality buds with a very high THC content.

Simpson's Skin Cancer Revelation

In 2003, Simpson had three spots on his skin that his doctor believed to be skin cancer. The doctor removed and biopsied one, which then became infected and didn't heal. Almost on a whim, Simpson applied hemp oil directly to that sore and the other two spots. In only four days, all three cancerous spots were gone.

A miracle? Maybe so, but it isn’t a lone event. Once he started sharing his success story with others, people lined up to try the hemp oil.

Jack Herer is an avid supporter of Simpson’s, always ready to demonstrate his personal success as RSO healed many long-term diabetic lesions on his legs. Herer would be the first to say that Rick Simpson’s Hemp Oil is miraculous.

Rick Simpson has never charged a patient for the hemp oil he creates. He not only teaches people how to make the extract and provides it to the ailing folks who request it, but he also uses it for a variety of his own medical issues. He freely lists the recipe on his site.

What will happen next for Rick Simpson remains to be seen. One thing is for sure though, raiding and seizing his home does not make the police look like the good guys. This type of action only propagates further division in society, turning civilians and police away from one another.

“People are dying needlessly when there's a cure we all can grow on our own, or have provided to us,” Desmond Wynnd said.

“This is all a waste of energy, when we could be helping sick people. That's all Rick is trying to do.”

“Why are all these people trying to avoid such a simple truth? If I am in some way wrong in what I have been saying then I invite the system to come and prove it. I would be happy to put on a public demonstration of what this (hemp) oil can do.” —Rick Simpson

The control of natural medicine is a threat that we should take very seriously. We are awakening into the reality that we can heal ourselves and that the plant kingdon has been doing so for as long as we've had a relationship with plants. We are at a time when there can be no more control of these cures, and the world will be a better place for it. Hear this: The age of control is over... take charge of your life and heal yourself. The medical industry is not geared for healing, it's geared for supporting the sick into a system that takes from sick people untill they have nothing left, toxifying the body and excelerating illness. Don't think we're stupid. The awakening is here and it will not be stopped as it will be more challenges than the authorities can handle in a little while. I have a feeling we will be forced to heal ourselves quite soon as these modern medicine in the form of structured phasmecuaticals starts to colapse. good luck everyone. may the truth shine through - there is no more denying it. Thanks Rick. You're a legend. Stay strong.

This is sad that he can't come back home because he did nothing but try to help people when the gov't and docs say there is no hope! He was my only hope and now he is my hero ♥ Best wishes Rick ... Think positive! Know you are missed

I think the government of canada is run by dea. when i imported a car from the us the canadian border guards made me return to us customs because i had not given the us 48 hrs to check the papers. that is an american law which was being inforced by canadian customs. when i questioned this the canadians told me tough.I don,t see why that was any business of canadian customs . I was breaking no canadian law

prometheus January 11, 2010 5:45 am (Pacific time)

Why not make it much simpler, and call it "Hemp Flower Oil"? that way it can be very clearly distinguished from Hemp Seed oil etc...

Dr. Medical December 29, 2009 7:03 am (Pacific time)

There's no verifiable evidence that Simpson's oil cures cancer or any other disease. It's all completely anecdotal and unscientific. He appears to have a sort of messiah complex, which is fine, but at the same time he is breaking the law.

BONNIE KING: There is plenty of evidence. If the gov't will allow testing, then the scientific data you are seeking will exist, but until then it must be testimonial and documentation via individual success stories. It is unfortunate when a subject such as curing cancer has to be tarnished with the fatalistic view that it should not be considered because of a legal technicality. The "laws" are not permanent. More and more people around the world agree that ending criminalization will benefit life on earth.

@Electropig (again) LOL... I just realized you were talking to the earlier poster than me talking about Global Hemp (His business?) in one run on paragraph of monolithic unreadability.... That naming convention part of my first post got removed, along with the paragraph spacing. Oh well... guess I should stop getting offended, or being critical, for today... not doing very well at either...LOL Anyway... be well one and all, and never thirst.

M in Oregon December 9, 2009 11:43 pm (Pacific time)

@Electropig... I did have paragraph spacing in my post... It was edited/shortened by salem-news I guess. I know, because I copied and pasted it to a file just in case it got lost to the intermitent interwebnet thingys. I put a lot of effort into what I was saying, then found 2/3rds was cut, and the remaining portion was rendered much less readable than what I originally composed and sent. Needless to say I am less than encouraged to make the effort to post my views at salem News, which is too bad. They are a great news source and I enjoy reading and posting in comments. As for the Rick's "Hemp Oil" / regular hemp seed oil issue, I have heard and read quite a bit of confusion from some of those searching out the information on various forums and in interviews with Rick and others. It just seems to me Cannabinoid Oil(or even Hash Oil, if you want to go slang) are more specifically descriptive terms. A small difference, yes... But to someone trying to find the medicine, who may not be familiar with info related to hemp and cannabis, it might be a life or death difference. BTW, E-pig, much respect for your many informative and illuminated posts that I have read on some of the 420 forums over time.

Rick is a wonderful man and this situation is unbelievably wrong. Thank you Bonnie for writing such a wonderful, truth filled article about this amazing man. I have had the privilege to talk with Rick many times and I guarantee you there was never a time I called when he EVER said "I am to busy or its to late at night or I'm tired and don't want to talk right now." He NEVER had a negative attitude!! He was ALWAYS ready to give instruction and/or reassurance about this miraculous medicine. He was /is selfless and anyone who can help him I encourage you strongly to do so. Jack Herer does endorse his medicine and it is Jacks right to be given this medicine as an MMJ patient to help him heal. This should not be withheld from Jack during his recovery. It has already helped Jack in many ways. The pharmaceutical companies must be getting nervous if they are stopping Rick.Shame on you greedy pigs!!!

Winder December 7, 2009 8:56 pm (Pacific time)

I heard Rick Simpson is back in Canada. Anyone else hear that? Saw it on the latest Cannabis Common Sense (THCF's HempTV)episode -- great show! Lots of great info on OMMP, OCTA2010, some fascinating old cannabis pharmaceutical products, and a hilarious "72 year old" which then changes to "I'm 62 years old" caller. Very diplomatic reply by Mr. Stanford when Tim Pate calls her out on it...tune in!

Ersun Warncke December 7, 2009 11:31 am (Pacific time)

Thanks for the article and the link to "Run From The Cure." I was previously unaware of these reports of the use of cannabis to fight cancer, and the various medical studies providing evidence for this. "Run From the Cure" was highly informative and I would recommend watching it for anyone who is not aware of these facts.

Roger Miles December 7, 2009 8:31 am (Pacific time)

Anyone know what the cancer cure rate is for those countries that allow this to be used? If there is enough statistical evidence from an assortment of locations then that would be of great assistance in getting this type of treatment more into the public purview. I did see one poster blamed it on W, that sure is the catchall for those eager to point fingers when all else fails, like some real reasoned thought.

Dez December 6, 2009 1:53 pm (Pacific time)

Well written article, Bonnie. You did some serious research, good stuff! So I noticed somebody made the comment about Rick doing it for free. I want to say this, if anybody ever says that Rick Simpson endorses us so feel safe in buying the medicine from us, WALK AWAY. There have been a lot of worldwide scams, as well as scams closer to home, with people saying he endorses them when he hasn't/doesn't. So grow your own if you can, it's easy. Extracting is even easier. Rick would tell you this personally if he was home. He always made it clear to me to not buy it if I didn't have to, grow it myself. I agree with that totally. If you have no choice but to buy it, make sure it is somebody you know, do your research. There are too many dishonest people out there wanting to make a buck off people's desperateness. I know this for a fact, have seen the end results and it isn't pretty. Empower yourself. Empower others. For example, if you buy it off the street (it's usually called hash oil or honey oil) be aware that many sellers thicken it with things like lipstick. And worse stuff. You just don't know what you're getting even from friends. So if you're not desperate, have the time, grow it on your own. And don't be dumb and just grow it so you can sell it to desperate people. Karma will get you. I doubt the people I am referring to are reading this, but your day will come. People like that are just plain soulless. That's my rant.

To the makers and proponents of HEMP SEED OIL: It is plain as day to anyone who understands the language that the terms "HEMP OIL" and "HEMP SEED OIL" are not the same. Far be it from me to criticize language usage under normal circumstances, your "distinction" is irrelevant, as I expect that 99.9% of people are quite capable of making the distinction between the two terms. It's like saying "People aren't going to know the difference between "latex paint" and "oil-based paint"...people DO get the difference...but they have to first understand THE TRUTH, and stop buying into the PROPAGANDA. PS: Hit the return key from time to time...that was almost unreadable.

M in Oregon December 5, 2009 6:50 pm (Pacific time)

I love Rick, honor, respect, and support his selflessness in going against the establishment to provide medicine and knowlege to, and for the benefit of, all of humanity, free of charge. For this defiance of the powers that be, they are taking away his ability to live as a free man in his native land. That he chooses to avoid the term Marijuana is understandable. For 6 to 10 thousand years before the corporate campaign of the early 1900's to demonize the cannabis plant, most Americans had never heard of Marijuana. At the same time, they all knew and depended in their daily lives on cannabis hemp products for fuel, fiber, food, and medicine. The Sativa and Indica strains were common in medicinal prepararations that were legal and widely used, but were not patentable, so fair market competition was in play, medicine was affordable, and the fact that those too poor could grow it themselves kept it that way. By bringing in this term Marijuana, a slang term from mexican spanish for mary jane, they were able to fool americans into thinking that it was a different plant than thier trusted friend cannabis.

ElectroPig Von Fökkengrüüven December 5, 2009 4:51 pm (Pacific time)

Thanks for picking this up, Bonnie!  The world needs to know about this whole situation...and if Rick is right (as I believe he may very well be) then it also may proven to finally be the death knell to cannabis/hemp prohibition around the world!

Since the Canadian government is currenty in the process of approving the failed mandatory minimum sentencing policy that the US is rapidly preparing to abandon, (Google "Bill C-15") it is more important than ever that we get a DEFINITIVE ANSWER as to the true benefits and uses of cannabis/hemp...from SCIENTISTS and MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, rather than politicians doing the bidding of corporate lobbyists and other criminals, bent on profit at any cost...so long as the people pay for it.

For Canadians reading this article and understanding it's ramifications, it's time to stand up for your rights, contact your local politicians and KILL BILL C-15!

There is also the potential for Bill C-6 to absolutely decimate the entire natural health products and natural health foods industries as well.  If THIS bill is allowed to pass, there will even be restrictions and controls placed on vitamins, minerals, herbs...further removing any form of naturally based HEALTH possibilities in Canada.

This is about a great deal more than Rick Simpson, but Rick is definitely a beacon in the fog of Canadian Health POLITICS.

In my mind, health should have never been a political issue...it is a basic right, and such an essential thing as general human health should not be made illegal, for any reason, by anyone.

Again, Kudos for this coverage!  VERY MUCH appreciated, to put it as mildly as possible!

Editor December 5, 2009 7:11 pm (Pacific time)

To the comment user with the name, 'More Proof is needed': That is way too long of a comment, and we are not here to propagate information that contradicts what our research indicates.  No, there is not enough research on marijuana as a medicine.  Why?  Because the stupid and archaic laws that exist in the United States have prevented it, and that is a shame.  But furthermore, there are studies which you choose to state "do not exist" that do indeed exist, but have not been accepted.

There is positive research regarding cancer, there is positive research on many other aspects of this herb and more researchers are constantly getting in the game.  So, you choose to segregate physicians who sign medical marijuana permits for patients in your super-long comment as somehow being different, whereas growing numbers of thousands of doctors are signing on to signing permits.  I think you are late to the discussion, and we simply don't publish comments that contain false and misleading information.

Thank You for this wonderful story. I never knew, that he did it all for FREE. Unlike, others(who know who they are)sell it, for alot of $$$$. What a compassionate man. God Bless Rick, and his strength to continue this fight. And congratulations, to him, for getting *The Freedom Fighter of The Year Award*, as well. Two men, Jack and Rick, giving their whole lives, to the legalizing of Hemp. Two very wonderful, good hearted men. This world is so backwards. We all hope that this news will spread, and try to help those who really need it. And, on PhoenixTears.ca, tells you how to make it, the way he does, because on the forum, on his sight, there are alot of people making it differently. But, thanks Bonnie, once again, for giving us the facts. Sending Lots of Prayers to Jack and Rick. Linda

Thank you so much for covering this. I hope you can keep following the story if any updates happen. There's only one local news station that covered the story here in the Maritimes. Rick's own local paper has not even done a story or anything on him since the raid. It should be National news.

Global Hemp December 5, 2009 11:07 am (Pacific time)

If Rick Simpson's Marijuana Oil really does treat and / or cure cancer, then that is fantastic and he is fully supported. However, he should seriously reconsider mislabeling his product as Hemp Oil. There are literally hundreds of names for marijuana, but only one name for hemp. Take dogs for example. One could group all dogs into one category and simply refer to them as dogs. Then, one could go one step further and label dogs as lap dogs or hound dogs, etc. However, anyone who has seen a poodle, certainly would not mistake it for a collie, a beagle for a great dane, etc. The same goes for hemp and marijuana. When there is a descriptive name for something, you should refer to it as such. You certainly would not substitute a jalapeno or habanero pepper in place of a green bell pepper when making a pizza or salad would you? The general public has been misled by the DEA to believe that all cannabis is marijuana, or at the very least, the unused portions of marijuana are used to make rope, paper, clothing, etc. Well, that is of course not true. From a huge effort by trade groups such as Hemp Industries Association (HIA), Vote Hemp, and companies such as Global Hemp, Dr Bronner's, and Nutiva, the public is becoming aware of the difference between hemp and marijuana. Then, along came Rick Simpson. Global Hemp has had many cancer suffers who have visited the Global Hemp online store to purchase bottles of Nutiva Organic Hemp Oil, believing that it will cure their cancer. While some people may like the increase in sales, its actually a bad thing for the cancer patient to think that they are purchasing a cure for cancer from the Global Hemp Store. Hemp Oil is produced by cold pressing hemp seed for its highly nutritional oil. Hemp Oil is a vegetable oil, its a nutritional oil. Marijuana Oil on the other hand is a solvent extract of marijuana. Its a medicinal oil, not a vegetable oil, not a nutritional oil, not a salad oil. Hemp Oil is legal for purchase, such as at the Global Hemp Store. However, Marijuana Oil is not legal to sell online and is not legal in most of the United States. So, if Rick Simpson is out there, I hope that he will finally learn to label his product appropriately. Once more, one would not simply pass off a jalapeno or habanero pepper as being one and the same as a green bell pepper, now would they? One would not bet on a beagle winning a dog race against a greyhound now would they? Rick, your "Hemp Oil" is Marijuana Oil. Please label it as such. This simple move will help cancer patients in search of true Marijuana Oil and will allow the hemp industry to continue promoting Hemp Oil that is high in Essential Fatty Acids, including Omega-3.

Perhaps this is the best way for Rick to serve the community of GLOBAL interest in the miracle of healing. Today one can take advantage of another, more accepting, society in order to advance science and ease suffering. Rick said several years ago that he was being forced out of Canada, but now it is really come to that. Thank you Bonnie for your work. We really appreciate it. Medicine is still available to those in need, just ♦contact Phoenixtears for info. One Blessed Love

Plz continue to investigate into this, and update this article with any new details. Its an important story that the world NEEDS to hear! JG

Daniel Johnson December 5, 2009 9:23 am (Pacific time)

Reminiscent of Galileo in the early 1600s who built the first usable telescope and pointed it at the night sky. He saw craters on the moon and satellites revolving around Jupiter. The Church fathers refused to look through the telescope despite his entreaties. They said there was no point in looking because they knew in advance what they would see. In this case medical science is acting in the same way. Hemp oil can obviously do no good, so it would be a waste of time to examine its properties because it's known in advance it can't do any good. A few years ago, under the Martin Liberals, Canada was on the verge of decriminalizing or even legalizing marijuana, but W was still in office and, here in Canada, nothing happened. Draft legislation had even already been prepared. All very frustrating that the tail wags the dog.

Winder December 5, 2009 7:00 am (Pacific time)

Thank you Bonnie, for that wonderful article! Rick Simpson should not have to hide out in Europe from these right-wing nazis that have yet again raided his home -- this time, while he wasn't even in it! How courageous of the RCMP. If the DEA was involved, they should be disbanded. Mr. Obama, get on that will you? Ha! Fat chance. He's already backtracked on so many campaign pledges it's not funny. He said, and I quote, "The war on drugs has been an utter failure. It's time we rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws." He was right. What changed? He wants to get reelected. Well, he's not getting my vote, unless he tells those stooges at ONDCP to stop spewing prohibitionist propaganda, and get the most beneficial plant known to man off that Schedule I, where it was placed by crooked politicians. Salem-News is to be commended for publicizing these videos...the world needs to see them. The truth will overcome the mass-enforced ignorance which our governments have imposed upon us and the world. I can't wait for the movie!
