Nick Horner, Just One Victimized Vet
Daniel Johnson Salem-News.com
Prosecutors want to kill a three-tour combat veteran who was prescribed dangerous drugs by the same government that trained him to kill.
(CALGARY, Alberta) -
Too often, vets come back with their bodies and minds shattered. They’ve risked everything for their country—which means you. You owe them. Don’t walk by and pretend to yourself he is someone else’s problem or obligation.
Nick Horner is a man who should not have gone to Iraq for a third deployment. The reason these men have to go for second and third tours is because too many others are shirking their responsibility.

A Combat Soldier on Death Row?
Tim King Salem-News.com
Prosecutors want to kill a three-tour combat veteran who was prescribed dangerous drugs by the same government that trained him to kill.
(ALTOONA, Pa.) -
When judges and prosecutors ignore well established scientific evidence in an effort to make a name for themselves, they are working strictly for the sake of their careers, instead of the people they are elected and hired to serve. I can't say whether that is taking place in the trial of Nick Horner, but I wonder.

Aging`s Mega Challenge Posed: Fewer Roles, Reduced Self-Image
By Barry-Lee Coyne Salem-News.com
That morass can be lessened. God gave us the lips to determine our attitude.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
There is a precarious tightrope in everyone's life. It runs between two opposite points: Tradition and Transition. It is never that simple to straddle.
Tradition represents the way things are and have been for a long. long time. These are essentially habits we've used as our personal shields. Sometimes they are distractions from facing reality (although we hate like the dickens to admit that's so).

Patience Is My Middle Name
A Dad’s Point-of-View, by Bruce Sallan
On this subject, I guess I’m the culprit in my family, for the most part, and like so many of the stubborn things we do, it does me no good nor does it promote harmony among us.
(AGOURA, Calif.) -
First, a disclaimer. It seems the reactions to my families’ nicknames has been mixed from readers. I respect my readers and I also got the same feedback from a new friend, via this column, in Australia.
Isn’t the Internet amazing? So, hereafter, I will dispense with the nicknames. My wife is Loren, my older son is Will, and my younger one is David. And, I love them dearly.

Add into the mix that he’s a single dad and has no immediate family around and you have my situation, a few years ago.

Stockholm Religion
Commentary by Daniel Johnson Salem-News.com
We are a culture in deep denial, and I’m not talking about global warming.
(CALGARY, Alberta) -
In 2002 16-year old Bethany Hughes of Calgary was diagnosed with leukemia, which doctors said could only be treated with blood transfusions and chemotherapy.
The Hughes’ were devout Jehovah’s Witnesses who did not believe in blood transfusions and, because of her own, parentally inculcated, devout beliefs, Bethany did everything she could, even in her weakened state, to resist treatment, including pulling tubes out of her arms.

Tim King Salem-News.com
New Mental Health Test Bill is no Mother's Day present for American moms.
(WASHINGTON D.C.) -
Groups advocating to help maintain the basic freedoms of American mothers are speaking out loudly against legislation known as "The Mother's Act".
