MLB Draft: Twins, Cubs Select Oregon Players in 5th and 8th Rounds

Jake Reed goes in the fifth round to the Minnesota Twins, while Tommy Thorpe was selected in the eighth round by the Chicago Cubs.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - University of Oregon baseball players Jake Reed and Tommy Thorpe were drafted on day two of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday.

Oregon has now had 26 players drafted since 2009 with a total of 45 Ducks drafted all-time.

Oregon State Duo Up for Top College Baseball Award

The Beavers Ben Wetzler finished the 2014 season with a 12-1 record and national-best 0.78 earned run average.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Oregon State University Oregon State left-handed pitcher Ben Wetzler and outfielder Michael Conforto are two of the five finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate player.

The honor is voted upon and awarded by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Other finalists include Kentucky’s A.J. Reed, LSU pitcher Aaron Nola and Kennesaw State catcher Max Pentecost.

Lady Ducks Add Gonzaga Transfer

Danielle Walter averaged 4.5 points, 2.6 assists and 1.3 rebounds while appearing in all 34 games for the Bulldogs last season.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - University of Oregon The Oregon women’s basketball program has signed fifth-year Gonzaga transfer Danielle Walter, head coach Kelly Graves announced on Thursday.

Walter, a 6-foot- combo guard from Pasco, Wash., will be able to play immediately in her final season of eligibility after graduating from Gonzaga.

NY Mets Take Oregon State`s Conforto With 10th Pick

Michael Conforto is Oregon State’s first-ever three-time All-American.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Oregon State University Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto has been selected in the first round, 10th overall, by the New York Mets on Thursday in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Conforto is the seventh Oregon State player to be taken in the first round, and the first since Mitch Canham and Eddie Kunz in 2007.

Oregon State Pitcher Andrew Moore Earns Invite To USA Camp

He will compete for one of 24 spots on Team USA’s roster.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Oregon State University Oregon State right-handed pitcher Andrew Moore has earned an invitation to compete for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team via its training camp later this month.

Moore finished the 2014 season with a 6-5 record and 2.77 earned run average in 16 games, 14 of which were starts.

(DUNEDIN, Fla. ) - Don Zimmer Don Zimmer was distinctive, a ball of distinction, you might say -- no corners, no angles, no edges. So round he almost was spherical.

Zimmer, a baseball icon for the past six decades -- most recently as a senior advisor for the Rays -- passed away on Wednesday at BayCare Alliant Hospital in Dunedin, Fla. He was 83.

Salem Child Selected to Go to The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team’s Kids Camp

Annie Flood is one of 20 kids From across America to be coached by Afghanistan & Iraq War Veterans.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Wounded warrior Annie Flood from Salem is one of 20 children from across America selected to participate in the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team’s second annual Kids Camp. All the children selected have amputations or are missing limbs.

Flood and the other kids will be coached by members of the WWAST, all veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars who have amputations but have faced and conquered their challenges to athletically compete at a high level.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - A.J. Balta and Matt Krook Freshmen A.J. Balta and Matt Krook have been named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America Team, released by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Wednesday.

Krook and Balta are the fifth and sixth Ducks’ players to earn freshmen All-America recognition.

Recruit guards Chai Baker and Gary Payton II both reaffirmed their commitments to Oregon State since Tinkle was hired.

Oregon State Top Honors Go to Cooks, Conforto, and Gardiner

The women’s basketball team won Female Team of the Year for the first time in the history of the award.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Oregon State University Brandin Cooks, Michael Conforto and Madeline Gardiner took top honors at the 16th annual Bennys Tuesday night at Gill Coliseum.

Cooks and Conforto shared the Male Athlete of the Year honor. Cooks was a consensus All-American wide receiver for the Beavers last season and earned the prestigious Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver. Conforto earned Pac-12 Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.
