Salmonellosis Outbreak Traced to Pepper Spices; Break Came in Testing at a Portland Restaurant

The contaminated pepper was packaged under the “Lian How” and “Uncle Chen” labels and sold to restaurant suppliers and markets – much of it going to Chinese and Vietnamese establishments.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Contaminated pepper sold to restaurant suppliers and markets Public health officials in Oregon and three other western states have tracked a multi-state outbreak of salmonellosis to ground pepper imported, packaged and distributed by a California company.

Union International Food Co. of Union City, Calif., immediately announced a voluntary recall of ground black pepper and white pepper as well as a number of other products that could have been cross-contaminated in its manufacturing facility.

Senate Votes in Support of Healthy Waterways for Oregon

Phosphorus limitations expanded to include household dishwashing detergents.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon river Rivers, lakes, and groundwater will be better protected with legislation passed this morning by the Senate. Senate Bill 631 extends the state’s ban on phosphorus to include household dishwasher detergent.

“This is a great bill for cleaning up Oregon’s rivers, streams, and lakes,” said Senator Jackie Dingfelder (D-Portland), chair of Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee. “Phosphorus can cause a buildup of algae that ultimately leads to biological death in some waterways.”

Portland Firefighters Rescue Arborist Pinned in Tree (PHOTOS)

The man was pinned by a branch, 35 to 40 feet up the tree.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland Fire & Rescue Portland Fire & Rescue's Specialty Rescue Team was called out at 11:43 a.m. on a report of an arborist who was pinned against a tree.

Lt. Damon Simmons with Portland Fire & Rescue says the man was cutting the tree when a large limb fell, striking him in the shoulder and pinning his harness and arm to the tree.

Inventors Face Off In OMSI`s Da Vinci Challenge

Team invention ideas will be tested during the challenge.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Da Vinci's Vitruvian Mang OMSI has invited 16 teams of inventors, eight youth and eight adult, from around Oregon to put their minds to work and take part in the Da Vinci Challenge.

The teams have been tasked to build a modern adaptation of a da Vinci invention using a renewable energy source—air, water, solar, or human power.

US Court Rules Victims of Priets Sex Abuse Can Sue Vatican

The offering plate may come back to victims of Catholic Church sex abuse.

(WASHINGTON D.C. (AFP)) - 9th Circuit Court in Portland, Oregon Attorneys for a man who says he was sexually abused 40 years ago as a teenager by a Roman Catholic priest cited a US appeals court decision Wednesday that paves the way for abuse victims to sue the Vatican, Agence France-Presse reports.

The case was originally brought seven years ago on behalf of a plaintiff named only as John Doe, who alleged that he was sexually molested on several occasions when he was 15 or 16 by Roman Catholic priest Father Andrew Ronan.
