Southern Oregon Coast Closed to Shellfish Harvesting

Closure runs from south jetty at Florence to California.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - clams and mussels photo The Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife jointly announce the closure of recreational and commercial shellfish harvesting from the area south of the jetties at the Siuslaw River, at Florence, to the California border due to elevated levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning or PSP toxins.

The closure includes clams and mussels found on the beaches, rocks, and jetties in this section of the Oregon Coast.

Woman Falls from Cliff, Three More Plucked from Oregon Coastal Waters

Coast Guard Group Astoria also responded to a report of three people in the water at Seaside, Ore.

(SEASIDE, Ore. ) - coast guard rescue A Coast Guard helicopter crew airlifted a woman who fell from a cliff at Ecola State Park near Seaside, Ore., Wednesday.

Coast Guard Air Station Astoria received a call from the Seaside dispatch center at 4:00 PM that the woman and two Good Samaritans were in need of rescuing from the bottom of the cliff.

The 18-year-old woman injured herself when she fell nearly 50 vertical feet into a cove on the South side of the park.

Six People Pulled from Oregon Coastal Waters Tuesday

A teenage boy is presumed dead after disappearing yesterday while wading in the waves with friends near Cannon Beach.

(SEASIDE, Ore. ) - coast guard photo A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued two swimmers from the waters near Seaside on Tuesday.

Coast Guard Air Station Astoria received a call from 911 operators at 5:44 PM that three swimmers had been caught in a riptide and were pulled out to sea.

Caution Urged on Oregon Beaches After Series of Accidents

People are urged to be especially careful with their children.

(CANNON BEACH, Ore.) - Beach safety sign Warm weather and the lure of an ocean beach have resulted in several water rescues on the North Oregon Coast just as the Fourth of July Holiday arrives.

Chris Havel with Oregon Parks and Recreation says strong tides are producing conditions that expose swimmers and waders to dangerous rip currents.

Swimmer Rescued Near Warrenton Monday (VIDEO)

Riptides cause approximately 100 deaths annually in the United States, more than all other natural hazards except heat and lightning.

(SEATTLE, Wash.) - Oregon beach rescue by: Tim King A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a swimmer from the waters near Warrenton, Oregon, Monday. They received a relayed call from 911 operators at 11:01 AM that two swimmers had been caught in a riptide and were pulled out to sea.

An HH-60 helicopter crew was diverted to the scene and airlifted one of the swimmers from the water. The other swimmer managed to swim to shore on his own prior to the crew's arrival.

Bodies Of Missing Priest, Friend Found on Oregon Coast

Their vehicle was found about 20 yards off Highway 26 in an area not visible from the highway.

(TILLAMOOK, Ore. ) - missing friends photo Two people from California who have been missing in Oregon after being last seen June 8th were found Sunday afternoon off Highway 26 in Clatsop County.

On Sunday, David Schwartz, age 52, and Cheryl Gibbs, age 61, were confirmed deceased in the maroon 2005 Toyota Corolla they were believed to be traveling in.

Missing Priest Subject of Search on Oregon Coast

The Tillamook County Sheriff is the lead agency in this search.

(TILLAMOOK, Ore.) - Oregon CAP Cessna 182 search aircraft The Oregon Wing of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol has launched two aircraft in support of a search operation underway in Tillamook, Oregon.

The Tillamook County Sheriff Office is continuing to look for a missing California Priest named David Schwartz and his companion, Cheryl Gibbs.

Oregon Coast Aquarium Adds Five Sharks to Passages of the Deep

The broadnose sevengills, all over six feet long, were transported to their new home.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Five sevengill sharks at Oregon Coast Aquarium The Oregon Coast Aquarium introduced five Notorynchus cepedianus, also known as broadnose sevengill sharks, to its Passages of the Deep exhibit this morning.

The complex process of bringing the sharks up to the top of the Passages exhibit and releasing them went without a hitch today.

Health Advisory Issued for Water Contact at D River State Park Beach

While these advisories are in effect at D River State Park beach, visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean.

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Lincoln  Citys D River Wayside A public health advisory was issued today due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at D River State Park beach, near the mouth of D River, in Lincoln County.

Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in ocean waters can come from both shore and inland sources such as storm water runoff, sewer overflows, failing septic systems and even animal waste from livestock, pets and wildlife.
