Prison Inmates at Shutter Creek Suffer Gastrointestinal Illness

Officials are trying to pin down the cause of the gastrointestinal sickness affecting about a third of the inmate population.

(NORTH BEND, Ore.) - Female inmates being processed into Sutter Creek A gastrointestinal illness affecting approximately one-third of the inmates at Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in North Bend, on the Oregon Coast, has caused the facility to cancel visiting for the upcoming weekend.

A spokesperson from the Department of Corrections Health Services says the problem began Thursday night and had become more widespread by Friday morning, causing the cancellation of visiting for Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th.

Nye Beach Health Advisory Lifted

It should be a great weekend at Oregon's beaches.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Oregon coast A health advisory for contact with marine water at Nye Beach in Lincoln County was lifted today by the Oregon Department of Human Services, in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

The advisory was issued Wednesday, after water samples at Nye Beach showed higher-than-normal levels of enterococcus, a type of fecal bacteria, in the marine water.

One Dead After Boat Sinks Off Oregon Coast

Neither man was wearing a personal flotation device.

(MANZANITA, Ore.) - coast guard One man is dead and another was rescued after their boat sank off the Oregon coast near Manzanita Thursday night.

The Coast Guard says they received word that an 18-foot pleasure craft with a 66-year-old male and a 48-year-old male had capsized south of the Nehalem Bay South Jetty and were in need of assistance.

Health Advisory Issued for Water Contact at Nye Beach

While these advisories are in effect at Nye Beach, visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - A public health advisory was issued Wednesday due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Nye Beach in Lincoln County.

Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in waterways are common after heavy rain events, when runoff can wash pollutants into streams and rivers, and sanitary sewers may overflow.

Medical Patient Harassment on the Rise in Oregon

The presence of the DEA has caused Oregon law enforcement to turn a deaf ear to the voice of the people.

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Police pullover I guess it could be difficult; spending your life as a law enforcement officer, and having to turn away from what you have always perceived to be a crime, that is the use of marijuana. "Suck it up" is what they used to tell us in the Marine Corps when we had to deal with a rule we didn't like, the same applies here.

What happened to one driver in the coastal town of Lincoln City two weeks ago typifies the current trends in Oregon police behavior.

Vessel in Trouble Off Oregon Coast Rescued by Coast Guard

The Coast Guard is presently enroute back to port with the disabled vessel in tow.

(TILLAMOOK, Ore.) - The Coast Guard is in the process of towing the crew of a disabled 65-foot sailing vessel back to Tillamook Bay, Oregon.

The Coast Guard says they received a report via VHF-FM radio just after 8:00 AM that the sailing vessel Hawaiian Chieftain, with 12 people aboard, was foundering in 14-foot seas and 35 knot winds. It was also reported that the sails were lowered due to the wind speed and that the vessel's inboard 490-horsepower engine has seized.

The state is reevaluating the list of beaches that they will monitor over the coming winter.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The magnificent Oregon coast The Oregon Department of Human Services seeks public comment regarding its list of proposed beach monitoring sites for the 2007 winter season.

The DHS beach monitoring program tests the water quality at selected Oregon beaches and notifies the public when elevated levels of bacteria are detected. Beaches are placed on the list based on the presence of pollution hazards, previous monitoring data showing compliance risks, use of the beach by the public, and recommendation by members of the public.

Holding Period for Oregon`s Biggest Surf Contest Begins

Three Month Holding Period marks the beginning of the Pacific Big Wave Season.

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Aerial shots of the 2005 Nelscott Classic by Tim King Some of the biggest names in professional surfing will be in Oregon for the Pacific Northwest's epic "2007 Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic." The contest is regularly held in twenty to thirty foot plus surf, with surfers being launched into the gigantic waves with high tech jet ski's.

The holding period for this year's competition opened this week and extends through December 31st 2007. Contest organizers are monitoring swell and weather conditions and will offer a 48 hour notice when conditions look optimal. the Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic requires a large swell with little or no wind in order to hold the contest.

Search Called Off for Man Missing Off Oregon Coast

The Coast Guard says weather conditions on scene were approaching gale force winds with water temperatures in the low to mid 50's.

(ASTORIA, Ore. ) - coast guard The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a 35-year-old man who fell overboard Saturday, near the Columbia River entrance.

Coast Guard Group Astoria received a call from the 36-foot fishing vessel Ida W II that one of their crew members had fallen overboard and was not wearing a life vest.
