One Dead After Boat Sinks Off Oregon Coast

Neither man was wearing a personal flotation device.

(MANZANITA, Ore.) - One man is dead and another was rescued after their boat sank off the Oregon coast near Manzanita Thursday night.

The Coast Guard says they received word that an 18-foot pleasure craft with a 66-year-old male and a 48-year-old male had capsized south of the Nehalem Bay South Jetty and were in need of assistance.

Two 47-foot motor life boat crews from Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay and one HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria were launched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the men were found on shore with Manzanita Beach Rescue emergency medical technicians who was conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the 66-year-old male.

The Coast Guard airlifted the 66-year-old male and two Manzanita Beach Rescue EMT's onto the helicopter and transported him to a local hospital in Tillamook Bay, Ore., where the man was pronounced dead.

The capsized boat washed ashore and is being recovered by local authorities.

There were no injuries reported for the 48-year-old male.

The Coast Guard says neither man was wearing a personal flotation device.
