Oregon Road Reports Launch on Salem-News.com

To make this new aspect of our site even more useful, we have included tips on winter driving conditions and all of our current news department traffic reports.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Road Reports Oregonians now have a new service from Salem-News.com and the Oregon Department of Transportation that will help on days when the driving conditions are treacherous. The link is located on the left side of the front page.

At the top of the page is a drop down menu that allows a visitor to select the highway or region where they will be driving. This is "live traffic" that updates constantly thanks to ODOT.

Strong Winds Causing Problems for Coast Guard Communications

The Coast Guard has closed and restricted a number of Oregon ocean bars.

(SEATTLE) - Coast Guardsman standing watch The Thirteenth Coast Guard District Command Center temporarily lost communications with Coast Guard Group Astoria today due to hurricane force winds sweeping the Pacific Northwest.

A Coast Guard C-130 Hercules air crew launched from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento and will be patrolling the northern and central Oregon coast to serve as a communication platform for distress calls.

Crews Working Throughout Night to Restore Power

Pacific Power is encouraging customers to continue to be prepared for intensive weather and outages through late Monday.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Power lines Pacific Power crews are working diligently to restore storm-related outages along the Oregon coast, the mid-Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon and in other parts of the state.

As of Sunday at 9:00 PM, approximately 27,354 customers still are without power, and crews are working around the clock to get power back on as quickly and safely as possible.

Health Advisory Issued for Rockaway Beach

While these advisories are in effect at Rockaway Beach, visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean.

(ROCKAWAY BEACH, Ore.) - Rockaway Beach, Oregon A public health advisory was issued Wednesday due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Rockaway Beach in Tillamook County.

Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in waterways are common after heavy rain events, when runoff can wash pollutants into streams and rivers, and sanitary sewers may overflow.

Coquille Man Killed in Crash on Oregon Coast

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

(COQUILLE, Ore. ) - coast crash A Coquille-area man died Wednesday morning when his car drove across the centerline and collided head-on with another vehicle on Highway 42 east of Coquille.

The other driver received non-life threatening injuries in the crash that closed the highway about two hours.

Dangerous High Tides Prompt Oregon Beach Alert

Sneaker waves become especially dangerous at times of high tides and during winter storms.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Beach safety warning sign Forecasters say they are concerned by predictions of tides 10 feet or higher this week, and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is urging beachcombers on holiday coastal visits to be particularly cautious.

Just this past weekend, a Monmouth woman was swept out to sea and drowned while hunting for agates in the Taft area of Lincoln City. "This is a good time to keep an eye on the ocean," said OPRD beach safety education coordinator Robert Smith. "Even the most experienced beachcombers can be caught unaware unless they stay alert."

Deceased Woman Found on Beach Near Lincoln City Identified

The location where the victim was found was about 3/4 mile south of where she had planned to go agate hunting.

(GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore.) - Salishan Spit A Monmouth-area woman was found deceased Saturday morning by someone walking on the beach of Salishan Spit. The victim is identified as 56-year old Joan Elizabeth Ten Eyck of Monmouth.

Police say there was no indication of foul play. The investigation will be continued by Oregon State Police with the assistance of the Lincoln County Medical Examiner's Office.

Newport Boat Parade Will Light the Night December 1st

Newport's boat parade will feature a variety of watercraft, including charter boats, fishing boats, sail boats and even sea kayaks.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Lighted Boat Parade at Newport, Oregon Newport’s Yaquina Bay will get festive in a particularly spectacular way in early December as about a couple dozen boats take to the water gussied up in a variety of lights – all for the charity event known as the 14th Annual Lighted Boat Parade.

On December 1st from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, local lighted boats will make a large loop around the bay, from the Coast Guard Station to the Embarcadero Resort and back, showing off a variety of colorful designs.

Oregon Coast, Valley Battered by Strong Winds, Rain

Winds this morning have already gusted to 48 MPH at the Salem airport.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - storm watch The Oregon Coast and the mid-Willamette Valley is being battered this morning by heavy winds and rain. There are reports from the coast to the valley of numerous trees and branches being down, as well as scattered power outages.

About 25,000 PGE customers are without power, with the greatest concentrations on the east side of the Portland and Salem-area.
