Oregon Bottom Fishing Update

Normally, fishing for bottomfish would be allowed at all depths after Oct. 1.

(Newport, Oregon) - Salem-News.com Bottom fishing remains open inside the 20-fathom line amid concerns over yelloweye rockfish. Beyond 20 fathoms (as defined in regulation), bottom fishing is closed to minimize catch-and-release mortality of yelloweye rockfish.

Fishery managers brought bottom fishing inside 20 fathoms on July 23 when the yelloweye catches began to approach the federally-mandated cap. Anglers occasionally catch, but cannot keep, yelloweye rockfish while fishing for other species. NOAA Fisheries considers yelloweye, along with canary rockfish, as overfished and counts a certain percentage of those caught and released as mortality.

Man Treated for Hypothermia After Sailboat Runs Aground at Newport

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Beached sailboat in Newport, Oregon 30 July 2010 A Bellevue, Washington man is being treated for hypothermia at a Newport-area hospital after his 38-foot sailboat drifted overnight into the surf and ended up on the beach.

One Killed, Three Injured in Head-On Crash Near Monmouth

SR 99W was closed for approximately three hours while troopers from the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Fatal crash One person was killed and three others were injured in a two car collision on SR 99W south of Monmouth on Thursday evening.

Around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3rd, State Police troopers from the Salem and McMinnville Areas responded to a reported head on collision on SR 99W and Parker Rd. in Polk county.

Double Fatal Traffic Crash East of Newport Oregon

A Subaru crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with an eastbound pickup occupied by two people.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Fatal crash Two people died and a third person was injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 20 about five miles east of Newport. Aquarium Husbandry Staff is `Guardedly Optimistic` in Sea Turtle Rehabilitation

An Olive Ridley and a Green sea turtle both show progress at Oregon Coast Aquarium.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Dr. Dan Lewer, Aquarium Veterinarian, X-Rays a female Green sea turtle in Newport, Oregon The Oregon Coast Aquarium’s effort to rehabilitate two stranded sea turtles continues, with improvement in both turtles, found on different beaches last November.

An Olive Ridley sea turtle was found stranded on Agate Beach in Newport and a Green sea turtle was discovered on the southern Washington coast.

Coast Guard Rescues Four Surfers in Newport, Oregon

Depending on the conditions, Oregon can be an extremely dangerous place to surf, especially for novices.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Coast Guard helicopter Coast Guard rescue crews headed for a popular surfing area on the south side of Yaquina Head, in Newport, Oregon Wednesday, to rescue four surfers who were trapped on rocks at the base of Yaquina Head.

The Coast Guard at Yaquina Bay received a call at 5:00 p.m. from 911 asking for assistance in the rescue of the four men. Just less than 30 minutes later, at 5:27 p.m., an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Facility in Newport, was launched to fly a short distance and assist the men.
