Oregon State Police Remind Drivers to Stay Safe Over Memorial Holiday

Police say the main focus will be toward intoxicated, fatigued, reckless, and aggressive drivers, because they continue to endanger many people on our highways.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon State Police Law enforcement agencies face a challenging task each day trying to keep serious injury and fatal traffic crashes from happening.

This is especially challenging during the Memorial Day holiday period during which Oregon historically has the highest percentage of alcohol-involved fatalities of all the major holidays during the year.

New Year`s Eve Assault Suspect Convicted on Attempted Murder

A man who slashed and cut his girlfriend's face with a pocket knife is convicted on all charges.

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) - Rodolfo Hernandez Cruz Rodolfo Hernandez Cruz was accused of a viscous assault on his girlfriend in a fit of jealousy on New Year's Eve 2009. He has since been convicted of his crimes and is awaiting sentencing.

Beaverton Police explain that on January 1st 2009 at 5:14 a.m. they received a call from residents at the Conestoga Park Apartments reporting an assault occurring now, with a weapon. They explained that a man was attacking a woman with a knife.

Police Release Preliminary Post-New Year`s Holiday Statistics‏

Oregon State Police troopers noted five fatal crashes and 85 DUII drivers arrests during this year's holiday period,

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - New Year Traffic Statistics Preliminary information gathered by Oregon State Police and the Oregon Department of Transportation, reflect an increase in fatalities during the 102-hour New Year's holiday period between 6:00 PM, Wednesday, December 31st, 2008, and 11:59 PM, Sunday, January 4th, 2009.

ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) reports information received from Oregon law enforcement agencies indicates 7 people were killed in five separate fatal crashes.

This was an increase in last year's holiday period when five people died in four separate crashes. During the 2007 holiday period there were four reported fatalities.
