Watch Out for Increased Scams Due to Natural Disasters.

(LAKE OSWEGO, Ore.) - When natural disasters strike, con artists prey on those looking for details and hoping to help. BBB serving Alaska, Oregon, and Western Washington warns consumers that scams often circulate when natural disasters occur, such as tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes and floods.

Scammers were quick to respond to the tsunami that hit Samoa and surrounding islands on September 29.

Thalidomide was found to have caused birth defects in 10,000 European children in the late 1950s and early 1960s. For preventing an American Thalidomide tragedy, Kelsey was awarded the government's highest civilian award, the President's Distinguished Federal Civilian Service Award.

Kelsey's civil service career began in August, 1960, when she became a medical officer for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). After one month on the job, Kelsey was asked to review what was expected to be a simple and routine marketing application for Thalidomide. Thalidomide, a sleep inducer, had been developed in West Germany in the 1950s, and was widely marketed in Europe; belief in its safety was so widespread that the drug was available without prescription.

North Santiam River Levels Will Rise Tuesday

Western Lane District Raises Fire Precaution Levels

The district imposed fire safety rules on recreational activities in the forest on July 20th.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - The ongoing heat wave has prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry's Western Lane District to raise the fire safety precaution levels across western Lane County and northern Douglas County.

Beginning July 30th, most timber harvest activity on the three-quarters of a million acres protected from wildfire by the district will be restricted to the period from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Beginning Sunday, Oregon began to experience our first significant wildfire activity of the 2009 season. The John Day area received most of the activity with several lightning starts.

The lightning-caused Twelve Mile Fire burning in light fuels - grass, open pine and juniper - is located about 12 miles north of the town of Long Creek off Highway 395. The fire is estimated at 630 acres and 6 Type 2 handcrews along with 2 strike teams of engines were assigned to this fire. The fire is now 100 percent lined and mop us has started.

Study Finds Outdoor Cats Easy Prey for Coyotes

Group recommends keeping cats indoors.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Coyotes regularly feed on outdoor cats, according to a scientific study Observations of Coyote-Cat Interactions by Shannon Grubbs of the University of Arizona and Paul Krausman of the University of Montana published in the Journal of Wildlife Management.

The researchers tracked coyotes in Tucson, Arizona and observed 36 coyote-cat interactions, of which 19 resulted in coyotes killing cats.
