(SWEET HOME, Ore.) - Oregon Wildland Firefighter training It's hard to underestimate the importance of fire safety in a state like Oregon. This week, in preparation for the upcoming summer fire season, students are learning the finer points of wildland firefighting and honing their skills, until they get it right.

Paul Heibert, the incident commander at the wildland firefighter school, says a lot of the work is standardized training. "It's done nationally and we don't have a lot of wiggle room as far as what we teach them. which I'd say is a good thing. So three of the five days we have the mandatory stuff and the rest of it we have some play."

Soldering Torch Sparks Residential Fire‏ in Hillsboro

Hillsboro Fire and Rescue reminds all homeowners who plan to use open flame devices to always have a fire extinguisher within reach.

(HILLSBORO, Ore.) - Hillsboro Fire Engineer Randy Tegen Fire investigators in Hillsboro say a homeowner replacing his own water heater sparked a one-alarm fire that damaged his Hillsboro home Wednesday afternoon.

Storm Smith with Hillsboro Fire says the fire at 132 SE 41st Avenue was reported to 9-1-1 dispatchers at 3:36 p.m. "When the first Hillsboro Firefighters arrived from the Parkwood Station #5, they found residents outside waiving them in and smoke pouring from the crawl spaces of the home."

One Man Dies and Two Injured in Portland Apartment Fire

Fatal Apartment Fire in North Portland‏

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland, Oregon Fire logo Portland Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to an apartment fire at 5811 North Lombard Saturday at 11:31 p.m.

Lt. Rich Tyler with Portland Fire & Rescue says the first engine arrived at 11:33 p.m. to find lots of fire and smoke coming from a second story apartment.

Portland Water Bureau Warns Residents Against Imposters

While the Water Bureau must make home visits in certain circumstances, a Water Bureau employee will never collect money from a customer at the home.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Be weary of any water district employees who approach residents for payment of late bills. The Portland Water Bureau was alarmed to find that a person posing as a Water Bureau employee successfully scammed $44 out of a customer last week. Showing up at her front door, the imposter demanded $40 from the customer in order to keep her water on.

Coincidentally, the victim was nearing a three-day shut-off period, a warning given to customers who have not paid their bills.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Yellow pages advertising fraud Attorney General Hardy Myers today warned Oregon small businesses and non-profit organizations about misleading telephone solicitations from boiler rooms in Canada and announced the filing of a settlement agreement with a Canadian Internet advertising group, stopping them from telemarketing in Oregon until June 14th 2008.
