One Resident Hurt in Explosion as Fires Damage Salem Area Homes

Marion County Fire District responds to two fires, 3 minutes apart.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fires in Marion County, Oregon 3-27-08 Marion County firefighters responded to two Salem area fires today with only three minutes between the calls.

The first callout involved an explosion in a residence that was blamed on an aerosol can being thrown accidentally in a fireplace, two people were injured in a related explosion. The second fire broke out in an unoccupied travel trailer and caused no injuries.

Man Airlifted from Oregon Beach by Coast Guard

The Coast Guard was called out at 12:30 PM by the Charleston Fire Department.

(CHARLESTON, Ore.) - Coast Guard crews preparing for rescue airlift Coast Guard officials reported today that one of their helicopter crews airlifted a man near Charleston, Oregon. It is reported that 39-year old Frank Schneidle sustained injuries while walking along the beach close to the Cape Arago Lighthouse.

Red Cross Helps Monmouth Resident in Wake of Fire

The Red Cross provided Sparks with support for food, clothing and shoes.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Red Cross flag A team of two volunteers with the Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene of a house fire on Old Fort Road in Monmouth Monday.

They say the homeowner, 73-year old Sandy Sparks of Monmouth, was having Easter Dinner with her family when the fire burned her home Sunday afternoon/evening. A house guest was also away from the home at the time of the fire.

16-Year-Old Missing, 11-Year Old Critical After Incident in Heavy Surf on Oregon Coast

The tragic, unfolding story is a reminder of how treacherous waves on the Oregon coast can be.

(GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore.) - Firefighter on Oregon coast Police on the Oregon Coast say a 16-year old boy is unaccounted for and an 11-year old boy is in critical condition after being overwhelmed by the surf this afternoon at Gleneden Beach, north of Depoe Bay.

Around 1:15 PM, the group accompanying the 11-year old noticed he was having trouble in the surf. He was later found alive, but then police learned that a teen from another group was missing. It is suspected he was lost while looking for the 11-year old.

Transient Accidentally Burned to Death Under Salem Overpass

Police are withholding the victim's name pending notification of next of kin.

(SALEM, Ore.) - fatal fire image Salem police say a transient burned to death early this morning when a fire his was using to keep warm accidentally caught his tent and sleeping bag on fire.

A police spokesman said around 2:20 AM, a report of a fire under the the Mission Street overpass came into dispatchers. Salem fire responded and put out the fire, and later found the man's body.

Oregon National Guard Responds to Possible Anthrax Scare

The incident was a hoax. Still if convicted, the individuals who left the envelopes face possible prosecution under federal anti-terrorism laws.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - One of the newer units in the Oregon National Guard worked closely with local first-responders and civilian emergency agencies during an incident in Albany, Oregon, today.

Members of the Oregon National Guard's 102nd Civil Support Team were called to the Linn County Courthouse located at 300 SW 4th Ave. in Albany, after workers found two envelopes containing a suspicious white powder.

Canby Residents Evacuated Over Gas Leak

Canby Fire experienced just such an event in April of 2007 when a home being ventilated to remove excessive Natural Gas exploded with three firefighters inside.

(CANBY, Ore.) - Gas leak in Canby, Oregon 3-3-08 It took emergency crews two hours to resolve a natural gas leak today in Canby. This is a community sensitive to this danger after a natural gas explosion last year that happened in a home occupied by Canby firefighters.

During this incident today at at 1470 SE 11th, one entire street-side was evacuated, four homes had electricity shut down, and one handicapped occupant and his caregiver had to relocated.

Teenage Girls Injured in Head On Crash Near Canby

Two Vehicle Head On Crash Sends Two Teenagers to Area Trauma Hospitals At this point, police do not suspect drugs or alcohol as a contributing factor to the crash.

(CANBY, Ore.) - crash scene One of the only things a Canby Fire crew knew while enroute to a head-on crash this morning, was that there were two injured victims, and one person who was trapped inside one of the crashed vehicle could be heard screaming.

That has to be one of the more alarming aspects of the life of firefighters in this nation; they always have to brace themselves for the saddest and most tragic human related events.
